Welcome to The CoF Weekend Preview where we take a look at what’s going on this weekend in entertainment. Check back Monday for The City Strip and don’t forget to check out the The City of Films Fall & Holiday Movie Guide to see what else is coming out over the next few weeks to round out the year.

Happy Feet TwoIMDBRT (42%) – Trailer [1,2,3]

If you like a bunch of penguins dancing to novelty pop songs, this one is for you.  I enjoyed the first Happy Feet and have a feeling I will feel the same about our little frozen friends again, can they recapture the fun?  Probably.  I’m never one to put a focus on voice acting in an animated movie because sometimes it’s really not worth talking about (Pink lends her voice to this movie).  Robin Williams is the man when it comes to voice acting and his work in Happy Feet is pretty amazing.  Check out the trailers above, the original and it wouldn’t hurt to head to the theaters for this.  Sparkly penguins over vampires any day.

The Descendants (Limited) – IMDBRT (90%) – Trailer

It’s a new year, so here’s another movie to give George Clooney Best Actor consideration.  He’s a talent, there is no disputing it and Alexander Payne has made some great movies (Election, About Schmidt).  So is it any wonder that the movie is getting great reviews?  Not really.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 1IMDBRT (26%) – Trailer

You should never be ashamed to say you like a certain movie, but I’ll be glad when this madness is over.  The trailer had a trailer for goodness sake!  I still suspect they are saving anything worth paying to see for the final movie next year.  This will break records, hearts, and apparently a bed…yowza.

OTHER:

Woody Allen: A Documentary – (Sunday, PBS) – Here is a trailer.  It airs on November 20 from 9-11 PM and Monday, November 21 from 9-10:30 PM on PBS.

‘Woody Allen: A Documentary’ Trailer

woody

The great Woody Allen is the focus of a new documentary to air on PBS as part of the American Masters series.  He’s an icon of the world spanning half a century yet he’s such a recluse, it’s hard for anyone to really say anything about the man that isn’t hear say or drivel – until now.

Directed by Robert Weide (Curb Your Enthusiasm) and produced by Brett Ratner (pardon?) the two-part, three-and-a-half-hour film follows Allen’s life from his Brooklyn childhood to present day.  I would be interested to hear what Allen has to say about his own work and the work of others in the industry.  One of my favorite works of Woody Allen’s isn’t even a movie, it’s this book.  I read that on a four day bus ride to NYC, true story.

Weide had access to Allen for over a year, following the filmmaker from the London shoot of You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger to the Cannes premiere of Midnight in Paris.  As you will see in the trailer he also had a chance to interview Allen’s friends.

Woody Allen: A Documentary will air Sunday, November 20 from 9-11 PM and Monday, November 21 from 9-10:30 PM on PBS.  Watch the trailer below:

Welcome to The CoF Weekend Preview where we take a look at what’s going on this weekend in entertainment.  Check back Sunday night for the Box Office Report and return Monday for The City Strip.  This week we revealed the long awaited City of Films Show (listen here).  Don’t forget to check out the CoF Summer Movie Guide 2011 for what’s coming soon to theaters.  And Here We…Go!

MIDNIGHT IN PARISIMDBRT (91%)

Yes, Woody Allen gets first billing this weekend, because he’s earned it.  Say what you will about his work over the past 11 years (leave Match Point out of it though, that movie was fantastic), Woody Allen has already proven himself.  If he wants to make a movie every year (he has since 1965) for the fun of it, we can let him.  Midnight in Paris is getting great reviews and “fine form” is the consensus.  I just remembered that I read his book on a bus to New York City, how subtle of me.

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDESIMDBRT (36%)

Well this doesn’t bode well for a 5th Pirates movie, this movie is getting slammed for everything that could possibly go wrong with a movie.  Read My Review Here.

And Such:

Saturday Night Live (NBC, Saturday) – Justin Timberlake hosts, Lady Gaga performs.

The Simpsons/Family Guy/American Dad (Fox, Sunday) – Season finales!

Another year, another Woody Allen movie.  The director has made at least one movie a year since 1977, that’s dedication.  He’s not one to care what people think of his work either, as I’m sure he heard it all before; people saying his work is repetitive for example.  That’s something I would like to praise on his part actually, he’s not trying to be something he’s not.  Woody Allen plays Woody Allen in all his movies, just like Groucho Marx was the same character all the time too.  I’d say it’s working out pretty well for each of their legacy’s.

Midnight In Paris centers on a man (Owen Wilson) who is in Paris with his wife (Rachel McAdams) but begins going off on his own at midnight to explore the nightlife the city has to offer. Hit the jump to check out the trailer, the movie opens May 20th and will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. (more…)

Do I look like a Jew now?

Do I look like a Jew now?

Curb Your Enthusiasm has finally made it to the big screen! Oh wait. So an eccentric New Yorker played by Larry David abandons his upper class life to lead a more bohemian existence. He meets a young girl from the south and her family and no two people seem to get along in the entanglements that follow.

Apple has the first trailer, I laughed a few times. I couldn’t tell you it was a Woody unless it was tossed up on screen. And it is. Check out the trailer.

As for fans of the great Curb, a seventh season began production in December 2008. As of late 2008, HBO has been promoting the upcoming season for Fall 2009.
