Welcome to The CoF Weekend Preview where we take a look at what’s going on this weekend in entertainment. Check back Monday for The City Strip and don’t forget to check out the The City of Films Fall & Holiday Movie Guide to see what else is coming out over the next few weeks to round out the year.

Happy Feet TwoIMDBRT (42%) – Trailer [1,2,3]

If you like a bunch of penguins dancing to novelty pop songs, this one is for you.  I enjoyed the first Happy Feet and have a feeling I will feel the same about our little frozen friends again, can they recapture the fun?  Probably.  I’m never one to put a focus on voice acting in an animated movie because sometimes it’s really not worth talking about (Pink lends her voice to this movie).  Robin Williams is the man when it comes to voice acting and his work in Happy Feet is pretty amazing.  Check out the trailers above, the original and it wouldn’t hurt to head to the theaters for this.  Sparkly penguins over vampires any day.

The Descendants (Limited) – IMDBRT (90%) – Trailer

It’s a new year, so here’s another movie to give George Clooney Best Actor consideration.  He’s a talent, there is no disputing it and Alexander Payne has made some great movies (Election, About Schmidt).  So is it any wonder that the movie is getting great reviews?  Not really.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 1IMDBRT (26%) – Trailer

You should never be ashamed to say you like a certain movie, but I’ll be glad when this madness is over.  The trailer had a trailer for goodness sake!  I still suspect they are saving anything worth paying to see for the final movie next year.  This will break records, hearts, and apparently a bed…yowza.

OTHER:

Woody Allen: A Documentary – (Sunday, PBS) – Here is a trailer.  It airs on November 20 from 9-11 PM and Monday, November 21 from 9-10:30 PM on PBS.

Summit Entertainment has released the new full theatrical trailer for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn and it actually looks really – wait, no it doesn’t.  If you’re watching this trailer you know what’s going on, I don’t, so I won’t bother to guess.  Ok here’s my guess…she’s having sparkles vampire baby and it doesn’t like her muggle body?  Nailed it.

The film is set to be released on November 18th 2011.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse
I watched the first two movies back to back and really just had an awful time with them both. The acting and pacing was excruciating, nothing good came from them. Kristen Stewart, I can’t even be nice about it, you’re just the worst. I saw you biting your lip and playing with your hair in Into The Wild and thought you were just playing the horny skank really well. Then I saw you in Adventureland, same character. Stop it. (more…)

I love parking lot fights!  Too bad this one wasn’t very cool at all.  Here is a sneak peek at Twilight Eclipse, which was unveiled at the MTV Movie Awards. Spoiler alert:  They are all dead and haven’t realized it yet. (more…)

The lady of the house will tell you that I become “that guy” during these movies.  I was finally drunk bribed enough a few months back to watch the first two Twilight movies, and I couldn’t keep up.  I was asking her question after question.  “Why is he walking in slow motion?”  “Why does he sparkle?” until finally “Why are you leaving the room?”  No more help.  So enjoy this The Twilight Saga: Eclipse clip and feel free to explain it to me. Having a girlfriend certainly has its advantages and disadvantages.  This would be the first time ever there has been a legitimate post about the Twilight Series on the site, I have little interest in a these films.  I could go on at length on how they only put a bigger spotlight on what’s wrong with movies aimed at girls today.  Girls too should take note and be offended at how they are portrayed…oh wait never mind, an underage boy took his shirt off, as you were.  Here is the trailer for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse: (more…)

This bites.

twilight-stink

I'm scared for the human race.

I'm scared for the human race.

I hate this whole vampire craze that has caught on over the last couple of years. I just wanted to get that out there since a certain movie franchise and it’s fans (see the image to the right) are really getting on my nerves. In fact, Twilight is the inspiration for this very article. I don’t have any hate for the genre directly, as I was a fan of such shows as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel during their run. But it seems like any kind of slop with romance and dreamboat guys with messy hair and fangs can accumulate huge fanfare. While it would be very easy for me to discuss why the whole Twilight franchise is a nocturnal nugget of teenage angst, I don’t plan on doing that. Instead, I want to discuss some of the top vampire films made in recent years, each of which bring something a little bit different to the table. So without further ado, and in no particular order…

lauren bacall just served twilight

Lauren-BacallIf you were to ever walk through my father’s house you might think you were in a classic film museum.  The way he lays out every room to spotlight his favorites; the Bogart room and the Laurel & Hardy room are the most popular.  In the halls and down the stairs you will likely spot the black and white portraits of Lauren Bacall.  You might see her work on TCM a lot, two famous roles being that alongside Humphrey Bogart in KEY LARGO and THE BIG SLEEP.  Basically back when we had ladies in Hollywood and not skanks, she was the best.

I’ve seen her films, and eye her pictures every time I go down the stairs, but what she spoke out against recently, pretty much made my day.  She started a Twitter account and shared this little gem:

“Yes, I saw Twilight – my granddaughter made me watch it, she said it was the greatest vampire film ever. After the ‘film’ was over I wanted to smack her across her head with my shoe, but I do not want a (tell-all) book called Grannie Dearest written on me when I die. So instead I gave her a DVD of Murnau’s 1922 masterpiece Nosferatu and told her, ‘Now that’s a vampire film!’ And that goes for all of you! Watch Nosferatu instead!”

Game. Set. Match.
