scriptEvery day we in the City of Films hear that so-and-so is writing such-and-such. Here’s a rundown of recent writing news out of Hollywood.

Daredevil Reboot – It’s the reboot you have all been clamoring for and the honor will go to Fringe writer/producer Brad Caleb Kane. Fox wants to adapt the Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli “Born Again” arc (issues #227-233). As we reported back in March, David Slade (30 Days of Night) is set to direct. Here’s the wiki page concerning that story arc. [THR]

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – Man I’m glad to see this movie isn’t just sitting on a shelf somewhere waiting for someone to give a shit. Deadline reports that Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec, the scribes behind Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, are writing the screenplay for the new live-action movie we have mentioned with delight a few times. Michael Bay and Platinum Dunes are producing the film, and prior to this screenwriters Art Marcum and Matt Holloway (Iron Man) were set to re-write a previous draft, which with the new writers would mean their draft was not good enough perhaps?  I’m glad they are being choosy with this one.

TRON 3 -Disney has hired David DiGilio, whose only previous feature film credit is the arctic dog movie Eight Below, to write the next film. According to The Hollywood Reporter, another Tron movie will be up to the success of the upcoming Tron Uprising television show which will be on Disney XD in 2012. If that show get’s a following, and there’s a good script, then they’ll most likely green light the project. [THR]

DreamWorks Supernatural Family ComedyTom McCarthy (Win Win, The Station Agent) is to write a movie  about “a man who is able to revisit certain moments in his life through his home movies and change things.” That actually sounds fantastic to me and could be a lot of fun, the “family comedy” aspect however has me worried, that idea could bring a lot of drama and conflict if one was so inclined to write it that way. Hopefully Tom McCarthy, whose work does show a lot of heart and character will turn out as well as we can imagine. [THR]

Most people are so interested in the upcoming live-action reboot of TMNT [Iron Man Writers Working On TMNT Live-Action Reboot] that they forgot there is also another Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series in the works at Nickelodeon.

Nickelodeon purchased the rights to the turtles from Mirage Group and 4Kids Entertainment for $60 million back in 2009. We now have our first look at the new show (via Topless Robot) with a larger Wall St Journal attached:

The Wall Street Journal quotes executive producer Ciro Nieli saying that the new turtles will have “more individual attributes” than they did before.  The show will debut in 2012 on Nickelodeon.

Not much more is know about the new show, the animation looks like they tried to embrace the original comics a bit [see] which may be a good thing.  A darker TMNT story on Nickelodeon is a dream at this point I think, let’s hope the movie reboot takes it in that direction without succumbing to the PG-13 3D pandering.

Fight The Foot is a surprisingly well done trailer for a TMNT movie that doesn’t exist, but is said to take place before the events of the great TMNT 1 that we all know and love.

The creator says: My idea was take on the world before Shredder arrives. In my version Shredder would be more of an evil genius that takes over a common street gang and trains them into the organized clan later seen in the films. I’m a huge fan of TMNT but at the same time felt the world needed a different take than was previously established. [High Definite]

YouTube Description: April O’Neil reported on a new gang in the streets. Then it got personal. Only those below the streets can help her now.

How it should be, always.

Deadline gave us today’s scoop and I wouldn’t mention the fact that the Iron Man writers are involved in this story, but then I wouldn’t be able to talk about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and who doesn’t love to do that?

The reboot has been in development with Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes and now Iron Man screenwriters Art Marcum and Matt Holloway have been hired to write the new movie adaptation.  You may recall that last year Nickelodeon paid $60m for rights to the characters, and Viacom has been developing not only a new big screen movie but also a television series.  There are talks as well that “The studio is looking at this as its next huge franchise, like Transformers.” Co-creator of TMNT Peter Laird said this last year about the movie:

As you may recall from some of my previous comments, our initial discussions regarding the next film had to do with what we were calling a “hybrid” — live action with realistic Turtles rendered in CGI and blended in. This new idea — which, frankly, I am VERY pumped about — will have actors and stunt performers in full Turtle suits for filming in live action. As of right now, there is talk of using CGI to do “face replacement” for the suits so that we can get those great, expressive faces possible with CGI.

The other ideas discussed were a “Batman Begins-style”, retelling the Turtles’ origin story. Laird said that they are planning to return to the roots of the original comic book series, which for those of you who read it, own it or can Google search; it’s going to be sweet.   Sadly we are now looking at a 2012-2013 release.

TMNTA video was sent over to /Film today and I thought I would share; the extended alternative ending to Steve Barron’s live-action 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. The ending was never released theatrically, and has only yet to surface on the German DVD release of the movie. It involves April O’Neil trying to pitch the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle story as a potential idea for a comic book series. I didn’t watch the whole thing because the dude talking gets pretty annoying, the scene you want it at the beginning.  Jump for the clip. (more…)

Donatello

We have been hearing rumbles about the new live action TMNT movie for some time, and now we are getting somewhere.  Platinum Dunes (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre  (2003) etc)  will work on the film with Nickelodeon, which bought the rights for $60 million at the end of last year.  Michael Bay, Brad Fuller, and Andrew Form will produce for Platinum Dunes, which to me is pretty exciting.  They may have no idea what they are doing with this franchise and decide to seek help the only way they know how, searching the IMDB message boards for a plot.
