Superman: Man of Steel Casts Lois Lane

Monday, March 28th, 2011

amy adamsOscar nominee Amy Adams (The Fighter, Doubt, Junebug) has been cast as Lois Lane in the Superman reboot, Superman: Man of Steel.  The film to be directed by Zack Snyder has already cast Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman, Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent and Diane Lane as Martha Kent.

Zack Snyder, revealed to the Los Angeles Times that Adams received the news Sunday.  “It goes back to what I’ve said about Superman and making him really understandable for today. What’s important to us is making him relevant and real and making him empathetic to today’s audience so that we understand the decisions he makes. That applies to Lois as well. She has to be in the same universe as him [in tone and substance],” said Snyder.

Much like the prior casting with this Superman reboot, this one is good.  We are looking at a solid cast, well known yes, but somewhat subtle if you ask me.  There is still some major casting to be done before the film begins shooting later this year for a December 2012 release, the villain, General Zod for starters. Viggo Mortensen, Michael Shannon and Edgar Ramirez have all been rumored for the role.  Here’s hoping that the great Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road, Boardwalk Empire) is involved somehow.

costnerA few weeks back we reported that Diane Lane was cast as Martha Kent in the upcoming Superman reboot, so it’s only reasonable now to share who her husband and father to Clark (Henry Cavill) will be.  In another great casting choice, Kevin Costner has been confirmed to play Jonathan Kent [THR].

Director Zack Snyder had this to say:

“Jonathan Kent is the only father figure Clark has ever had, the man who was there to help Clark understand what he was meant to do in the world as Superman.  Kevin will be able to communicate the quiet strength of this rural American man who raised the greatest super hero of all time.”

Zack Snyder spoke recently on the film saying this version will assume “there’s been no other Superman movies.” The currently untitled Superman reboot, produced by Christopher Nolan, is set to start filming for a December 2012 release.

diane laneNow this is how you add class to a movie, the great Diane Lane has been confirmed to play Martha Kent in Zack Snyder‘s upcoming Superman reboot.  Henry Cavill was cast to play the caped hero not too long ago, and rumor has it they are looking at locking in Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent.  Lane can be seen next in HBO’s Cinema Verite [see here].

Superman leaps into theaters December 2012, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are producers on the film. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan.

Here’s the full press release:

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today that Oscar®-nominated actress Diane Lane will play Martha Kent, the only mother Clark Kent has ever known, in the new Superman movie to be directed by Zack Snyder. Snyder stated, “This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman. We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination.” Lane will star with Henry Cavill, who was recently announced as the new Clark Kent/Superman.

Lane earned an Academy Award® nomination for her performance in the 2002 drama “Unfaithful.” She most recently starred in the family hit “Secretariat.” She next stars in the HBO feature “Cinema Verite,” opposite Tim Robbins and James Gandolfini. Lane’s long list of film credits also includes “Nights in Rodanthe,” “Hollywoodland,” “Must Love Dogs,” “Under the Tuscan Sun,” “Perfect Storm,” “My Dog Skip,” “Chaplin,” “The Cotton Club” and “A Little Romance,” to name only a portion.

Continuing the long line of British gentlemen who can play superhero reboots (Christian Bale is Batman, Andrew Garfield is Spider-Man), Henry Cavill has been cast in Warner Bros.  Superman reboot to be directed by Zack Snyder and produced by Christopher Nolan.

The 27-year-old actor known for his roles in Whatever Works, Stardust, Tristan + Isolde, The Count of Monte Cristo and on TV with The Tudors has won the role after a long search.  It’s a good choice because even though I have seen all of those films listed, up until now I had no idea who this face was and I don’t plan on being an expert come time for the film to roll.  Call him a “nobody” if you will, but this guy just made another pointless reboot seem reasonable.

Snyder said in a statement, “In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen. I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.” [Variety]

The film is slated for a December 2012 release.

Superman Revival Gets Director And Villain

superman

So now that the dust has settled somewhat on the big news from last night, here are the details. Zack Snyder (Dawn of the Dead, 300, Watchmen, Legend of the Guardians and Sucker Punch ) will be directing the Christopher Nolan-produced David Goyer-scripted Superman for WB. THR is reporting that “like Superman Returns, it’s rumored to have a connection to Richard Donner’s Superman films. In this case, it’s the villain, General Zod.”

Snyder told USA Today: “Mainly male (superheroes), have gotten to evolve over the years. Batman. The X-Men. But I think the first (Superman) movies were so well done, he kind of got stuck. I think our challenge is to bring him to a modern audience that’s still respectful of the character.”

zack snyderBrandon Routh is probably not going to return if they seem to be starting over again, which is sad because I though he did a fine job and no one can say anyone else looks more like Superman than him. If there is one hero that doesn’t need an origin story, it’s Superman. Leave it to the animated opening credits because I know they don’t have to explain one of the most iconic figures of all time again. Zod is a good choice, there is only so many times Superman can fight Kryptonite, so have him brawl with someone who has the same powers, fair fight.

Zack Snyder confirms that as soon as he completes post on Sucker Punch, he’ll move right into the Man of Steel. “I’ve been a big fan of the character for a long time, he’s definitely the king of all superheroes, he’s the one,” Snyder told Deadline. “It’s early yet, but I can tell you that what [screenwriter] David [S. Goyer] and Chris have done with the story so far definitely has given me a great insight into a way to make him feel modern”. If I see Superman updating his facebook status in this movie, I’m out.

Zack Snyder’s Superman will target a holiday 2012 release.

supermanThere are little to no facts concerning Christopher Nolan’s Superman film, but we now have an idea of what direction Nolan is going with when news broke of the five directors that were on Nolan’s short list to potentially direct the film.

Noticeably absent is his own flesh and blood Jonathan who had been rumoured to be in the running.  Deadline’s Mike Fleming broke the news, and according to him, the directors currently being looked at are:

Tony Scott (Unstoppable, The Taking of Pelham 123)
Matt Reeves (Let Me In, Cloverfield)
Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles, Clash of the Titans 2 [upcoming])
Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code)
Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen, Sucker Punch)

Nolan has already started meeting with directors and will submit his choice to Warner Brothers in the next few weeks.  I think it would be nice to see Jones take a stab at it, he seems like he would be more restrained with the material, anyone see what he did with Moon?  Amazing.  We shall hear back soon, stay tuned.

Trailers

Up first for trailers this week, Welcome to the Rileys starring Kristen Stewart and James Gandolfini directed by Jake Scott, son of Ridley. A couple driven apart by the death of their daughter are brought back together when they meet a troubled young woman. Galdolfini looks to be in top form yet again in this nice little dramatic role. Kristen Stewart is shown only for a few seconds here and there, but we haven’t forgotten she really can’t act. The film opens November 5th. (more…)

You know it's true.

Last time we spoke, DC Entertainment president Diane Nelson denied that Christopher Nolan was overseeing the new Superman film.  A house of lies.

Nolan is overseeing Superman for WB as David Goyer writes the script based on a story by Nolan and Goyer. We know this because Nolan is talking about it. The director promises good things for the next Superman, and his wife, producer Emma Thomas, denies a few other recent rumors.  Meanwhile, Jonathan Nolan is ‘now doing the hard work’ on a script for Batman 3, based on a story by Christopher Nolan and Goyer. I just got chills.

The LA Times has quotes from Nolan and Thomas about Superman:

It’s very exciting, we have a fantastic story. And we feel we can do it right. We know the milieu, if you will, we know the genre and how to get it done right…[it] is a way of approaching the story I’ve never seen before that makes it incredibly exciting. I wanted to get Emma and I involved in shepherding the project right away and getting it to the studio and getting it going in an exciting way. But wait, there’s more!
