The guys over at The Super Mario Bros. Archive have an exclusive interview to share with you all, and we have a taste below.  Parker Bennett and Terry Runté were the duo given the task of putting concepts for Super Mario Bros. into a cohesive story for the big screen, not easy right?  As the Archive puts it: their creativity and drive to make an intriguing screenplay led to an intense collaborative effort with the directors, resulting in a story that laid the foundation for the rest of the project.

Last month we shared with you the other script ideas for the film which you can check out here.  Although Terry Runté passed away in 1994 this extensive interview with Parker Bennett looking back on the films creative process sheds a lot of light on the duos trials and tribulations with the project.  Here is a sample of just some of the great questions, head over to the SMB Archive for the entire interview:

Mind = Blown

  • What was your interaction with other cast members, including Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo? What were their reactions to the ever-changing script and shooting conditions?
  • In retrospect, do you think that that kind of approach was really the best option considering how the fans of the games reacted to the film? Would you do it differently if you had known how they would react?
  • Speaking of costumes, could you speak on how Mario and Luigi’s red and green “game outfits” were implemented into the film? Many fans (myself included) consider the scene in which the Mario Brothers get their suits as one of the best.
  • Were the actors willing to return for a sequel if the conditions were right for it?

mariobrosA few weeks back we shared this hilarious interview where Bob Hoskins admitted his hate for the Super Mario Bros. movie in an interview [see].  I can’t believe this, but we have more news on the almost 20 year old movie (Blu-ray special anyone?).

Via NintendoLife and The Super Mario Bros. Movie Archive (yes, a site dedicated to this movie) we learned that the movie had several rewrites which led us to lose this gem of a line: “Women are like old-time sinks. They run hot or cold, no in between.”

The original drafts and script notes that led to the final film include: the “Ghostbusters-inspired” sci-fi comedy script, the “Die Hard-inspired” sci-fi/action script and the secondary “Max Max-inspired” sci-fi/action script.  Read them all here.

In 1993 the Super Mario Bros. movie happened and it’s become common knowledge the movie sucked the big one and should never have happened.  The Guardian recently talked to the great Bob Hoskins (Hook, Who Framed Roger Rabbit) who played Mario.  If the point wasn’t clear before, he’s set the record straight now:

WIN some FAIL some

Cutting right to the chase here to avoid taking up the spotlight, a few weeks back the District Attorney made a post [here] about the new Prince of Persia movie. This got me wondering; in the history of movies what were some of the worse adaptations around? Now, I know this sounds like an oxymoron because to be honest there are really (in the eyes of fan boys) no amazing adaptations out there. So let’s take a look at some WINS and FAILS.  Leave your own below and I will be sure to comment!

Super Mario Bros (1993) – Do I really need to say more than has already been stated? (more…)

Tomorrow is the premiere of the Prince of Persia film and to say I have been torn would be an understatement. Hollywood is notorious for taking some of the most beloved video games and transforming them into steaming piles of cinematic rubbish. Super Mario Bros. had a humanoid Bowser, Mortal Kombat Annihilation utilized claymation, and House of the Dead was directed by Uwe Boll; just to name a few of the blunders. In the end, despite this track record of failure, I have decided that I will watch Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, and it is for these following reasons. (more…)
