darktower

It’s being reported that Javier Bardem is finalizing a deal to appear in The Dark Tower series being helmed by Ron Howard.  Bardem will play Roland Deschain, the last living member of an order of gunslingers who becomes the last hope to save civilization as he sets out in search of The Dark Tower.

javier bardem

Gunslinger? Yes.

This is a big production, a risk to say the least; the Stephen King adaptation is planned to span three movies and a limited-run TV series between each film, Deadline reports.  Imagine if this just doesn’t catch on with people, what a fail.  Ron Howard will begin production on the first film in September. He is also installed to take directorial duties on the first TV series.  Howard is now expected to start casting the other roles around Javier.

Stay with us for the official release, and tell us what you think about this series coming to life.  CoF’s Ryan Heinrichs has read the books and tells me they are really good.  What he doesn’t know is that I can’t read, thanks for bragging Ryan.

The City Strip #43: The Fears of a Clown

Monday, February 21st, 2011

clownThis week’s City Strip is up; check it out on the main comic page. The inspiration for this strip is pretty clear, clowns and the movies they freak us out in. Stephen King’s IT is one of my favorite, it still scares me after all these years – “When you’re down here with us, you’ll float too!” Yowza.

For some reason I remember having a very old VHS copy of a movie called The Clown Murders, it was one of John Candy’s first movies. It was awful, I can’t remember if the clown was a doll or a person in a costume at the end of it.

So, what’s up with clowns?

Dark Tower

Ron Howard might be done with ruffling the religious feathers, but now he might have to deal with Stephen King fans, scary. Howard, Brian Grazer and Akiva Goldsman are reportedly taking the rights to The Dark Tower (away from J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot), and their plans are rather large scale.  Akiva Goldsman would write a feature (Trilogy? Stay tuned) that Ron Howard would direct and Goldsman and Brian Grazer would produce. That feature would lead into a TV series that finished out the story.

The books began in 1982 and are still coming; this could be something pretty amazing considering what they have to work with; the scope, landscape, the parallel world setting and the cast of characters.  Here is a brief synopsis via deadline:

The Dark Tower is King’s answer to JRR Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, King’s epic novel series is set in an otherworldly but familiar world, and involves a quest to save the world. The series spanned seven novels that involved Roland Deschain, the last living member of a knightly order of gunslingers who exists in a world that has an Old West feel, but which is infused with magic. He is on a quest to find the Dark Tower, a structure that holds the key to the nexus of all universes. He encounters many allies and enemies along the way, as the world crumbles around him.  Tower encompasses not just a narrative about the Man in Black and Roland, the Gunslinger, that spans seven lengthy books (and one short story), but also the entire universe of King’s fiction. Characters from his other novels flit in and out of Tower”in minor and major ways.

Anyone reading the series or caught up yet want to share some feelings?  I can’t read.

It’s that time of year isn’t it?  Boil the milk Mum, I wants me some HC!  The best thing to come home to, after an empty house that is – Hot Chocolate is delicious, warming and very necessary.  Recent studies have suggested that hot chocolate possesses health benefits due to antioxidants that can be found in cocoa.  I’m one of those people who like to soak up the HC with about half a dozen full size marshmallows, still good for me then?  The first chocolate beverage is believed to have been created by the Mayan peoples around 2000 years ago.

The Mayans recently gave us the blockbuster film 2012, so…swings and roundabouts.  Watching Jimmy Stewart this holiday season?  HC it.  Coming home from a full contact hockey game?  HC it.  Bottom line, best hot drink ever.

family guy’s 3 kings

famking
Family Guy will spoof three classic Stephen King movies this Sunday. MISERY, STAND BY ME and SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION all get the Family Guy treatment. After Peter discovers the writing of Stephen King, he imagines his family and friends in three of King’s most famous works.

If you have not seen these 3 flicks go check them out right away. MISERY as you know stars the great Kathy Bates in the lead as a crazy fan, no Wesley Snipes in this one. STAND BY ME is one of my favorite movies, I had no idea after the first few viewings that it was a King novella (I didn’t always read credits). Lastly SHAWSHANK of course, perhaps the most popular of King films gained so much momentum after its release it is often found on Top 10 lists.

Watch them get the Family Guy treatment on Sunday.

more on stephen kings IT

Monday, April 6th, 2009

Dave Kajganich, the writer of the upcoming theatrical remake of Stephen King’s IT was kind enough to give an update on how this massive story is being streamlined into one film.

“The remake will be set in the mid-1980s and in the present almost equally — mirroring the twenty-odd-year gap King uses in the book — and with a *great* deal of care and attention paid to the backstories of all the characters,” says Kajganich. “I think the real twist here is that my pitch to WB — which they’ve assured me they’re on board for — is that this will not be PG-13. This will be R. Which means we can really honor the book and engage with the traumas (both the paranormal ones and those they deal with at home and school) that these character endure.”

“I plan to be very protective of the book,” Kajganich continues. “The reality, though, is that WB wants to do this as a single film, so I will have to kill a few darlings to make that happen. You have my promise, though, that I will do this with the utmost humility and respect for King’s work. He’s the King, after all, and I intend to continue to pledge to him my allegiance.”

I watched the TV version recently, still scary as hell.  I also recently got into the book for the first time.  I guess when I was younger over a thousand pages plus didn’t seem to appealing, give me Super Fudge!  I need this movie to be Rated R, a hard R.  And it would have to be about 3-4 hours long.  If they do two parts like the upcoming Harry Potter or what The Matrix did, I will understand.  Now we play the waiting game.  Want a balloon?

Gum Tape.  6 feet of fucking A!  This is what all my pocket money went to when I was a kid.  Getting one friend to hold it as you took it out the whole six feet like you couldn’t believe it.  Better than the jug of gum powder in my books.
