Lucasfilm’s today officially announced the special features for the September 12 Blu-ray release of Star Wars: The Complete Saga [see our August announcement here]. The nine-disc set of all six movies in the series, is said to have brand new features, material from previous releases – and the news of the day is that it’s missing great features from those same releases.  The set contains the special editions of the original trilogy.  Mind you, I don’t think a lot of people were thinking Lucas would take the time to remaster the original trilogy for Blu-ray.

When this hits the street, the revolt will begin.  The new “archival footage” may just be reworked footage we have all seen before, but will have a new graphic in the bottom corner.  I’ve seen it happen too many times.

Get your eyes adjusted and wallets ready, double dipping is about to go 3D!  Star Wars.com has just announced that the 3D conversion of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace will hit theaters on February 10, 2012.  Last September we announced that all the films in the series would be converted to 3D, read about that process here.

Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox announced today that the 3D theatrical launch of Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace now has an official release date — February 10, 2012! Set against the thrilling and exotic backdrop of a “galaxy far, far away,” Star Wars is perfectly suited to the immersive 3D theatrical experience, and Episode I delivers some of the Saga’s most stunning and spectacular sequences — from the Naboo invasion to the Tatooine Podraces to the climactic lightsaber battle between Darth Maul and the Jedi. Supervised by Industrial Light & Magic, the meticulous conversion is being done with utmost respect for the source material, and with a keen eye for both technological considerations and artistic intentions.

Are you going to head to the theaters to check it out?

darth vaderTHR and Deadline are reporting that George Lucas is set to milk the entire Star Wars franchise in 3D starting in the early months of 2012. Apparently Lucas was waiting for more 3D screens to open up in theaters. The first film to be released will be The Phantom Menace and continue in chronological order.

THR reports: Each conversion takes at least a year to complete; with Lucas personally overseeing the process to make sure each one is as perfected as possible. Lucas has said that the “Avatar” experience convinced him that “Star Wars” was ready for the state-of-the-art 3D treatment.

So we will have the Blu-ray’s coming soon, the 3D re-release in theaters over 6 years and then a 3D home video release that will follow.  There is just no end to this bloody thing is there?  So far we’ve only seen bad post-converted 3D films [examples here and here], so we have that going for us.

At something called Star Wars Celebration V, George Lucas made the big announcement that the entire Star Wars saga would be released in a Blu-Ray box set in Fall 2011. According to IGN, the set will feature “all six live-action Star Wars feature films, with the highest picture and audio quality,” along with extensive extras like “documentaries, vintage behind-the-scenes moments, interviews, retrospectives and never-before-seen footage from the Lucasfilm archives.”

Lucas went on to confirm that you’re getting the 2004 clean-ups of the 1997 Special Editions with a hint that a future release may include the restored original releases.  Lucas said that releasing the original trilogy was “kind of an oxymoron because the quality of the original is not very good.” This just in:  George Lucas doesn’t go on the Internet. Ever.  Of course the nerds want the poor quality George, don’t you see?  It’s nostalgia, not your generic and boring storytelling with polish on top.  We want to watch the scratchy film and remember when you didn’t have such a boner for action figures [read about said boner here].  I’m over it.

Family Guy Star WarsSay what you will about Family Guy‘s decreasing quality (I would agree with you), but one thing is for sure; they put a lot of work into their spoofs.  They love them some Star Wars that’s well known, but they have also had a lot of Back to the Future spots too, I wonder if they plan working on that trilogy soon.  Seth Macfarlane recently bought a DeLorean by the way, hinty hint hint.

Fox announced at Comic-Con that the final chapter in the Family Guy Star Wars mockery It’s a Trap will release on DVD and Blu-ray on December 21st. Seth McFarlane  also showed the first 10 minutes at Comic-Con. McFarlane claims this is his final parody on the Star Wars films.

avatarposter

I saw AVATAR this past weekend with no expectations.  Believe it or not, I stayed clear of a lot of hype – you might thank me for not posting a million stories on CoF about it.  This was my FIRST 3D movie; I was unaware of this non-option as well until the nice gal at the Box Office informed me it’s only in 3D.  So was it everything the internet world has said it is?  Yes.  Yes it is.  New technology had to be created to make this movie, James Cameron held out until it was invented.  The man has patience.  He’s told a story that isn’t from a comic, teen novel, or TV show.  This movie is why theater going will never die (so I hope).  There should be a lot of comparisons to Star Wars; Cameron has created just as Lucas did; a new world of exploration, characters and storytelling.  The movie going experience itself was nothing short of extraordinary and I would like to do it again.  This was the event of the year and the best way to send 2009 into history.
