bruce-almighty

Back in October we were pretty excited to learn that the Farrelly Brothers were moving forward with a true sequel to Dumb & Dumber, now there’s news that a sequel to Bruce Almighty is also in the works for Jim Carrey.  The film was one of Carrey’s last big hits; it would be nice to see him return to grace – even if it’s in the form of sequels to his biggest movies.

Dumb & Dumberer and Evan Almighty were big mistakes, so I’m guessing we are all just to forget they happened.  Done.  Variety reports that Jarrad Paul and Andrew Mogel (Yes Man) will write the sequel. The idea is to follow Carrey’s TV reporter once more, but there are no details so far.  Will Jim Carrey return for sequels?  That is something he has never done surprisingly, and it’s not like he has big shoes to fill – look at what they did with Ace Ventura [here].

taken

Taken was a great surprise full of action, suspense and a demanding performance by Liam Neeson.  What’s no surprise is the call for a sequel after taking in over $225M.  The film was met by “professional” critics with a resounding “meh”, but audiences including myself loved the movie and demand more fatherly ass-kicking via Neeson.

Good news is here; the sequel to the hit film is about to start shooting according to filmmaker Luc Besson (writer and producer on Taken), the film will start production in October. And in a brief interview, he went on to say that “Colombiana director Olivier Megaton has been using his time in Los Angeles to scout locations for the sequel to Taken,” and mentioned that “everyone is back for the sequel including Famke Janssen, who had a small role as Liam Neeson’s ex-wife in the first movie.”

If Mike Myers makes a movie no one sees, did it actually happen?

It’s like the old tree falling in the woods conundrum isn’t it?  Well the answer is yes, The Love Guru did happen and all can’t be forgiven yet.  What if he dusts off his “funny” Austin Powers clothes and brings the special agent out for one more (based on revenue) mission filled with cameo’s, poop jokes and probably Lady Gaga in a supporting role?  Of course!  People love to watch shit.

It’s been eight years since Goldmember, and according to HitFix Mike Myers is ready to star in and write Austin Powers 4.  Speaking of much needed sequels, it looks as though your wishes are about to come true, Bridget Jones 3 is officially moving forward EW reports.  Paul Feig (Bridesmaids) was being sought to direct the film, no word yet if that’s still a possibility.  Renee Zellweger will be happy though, she can get fat again, win a Golden Globe and go back to whatever she was doing before Bridget Jones.

the-thing

Here is the first trailer for The Thing prequel from director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr, it stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Death Proof), and Joel Edgerton (Animal Kingdom). The film is set to be released on October 14th 2011.

John Carpenter‘s 1982 classic The Thing is worth checking out for those who haven’t, whether a preqeul or sequel was necessary isn’t worth asking, it’s a weekly event now in Hollywood to have a remake or “revision” of something.  This movie looks better than most expected I think, Mary Elizabeth Winstead is always welcome on the screen.

Check out the trailer and full synopsis below and share your thoughts:

Mind the gap.

A week ago today we told you that American Reunion, the long sought-after authentic sequel to American Wedding is finally coming together with cast and a shooting date.  And now, a few plot details have been revealed via whatsplaying – Are you ready for another slice?  Discuss below!

  • The film will center around the gang’s ten-year high school reunion.
  • Oz (Chris Klein) is a big shot with a Malibu mansion and a girlfriend who seems to be a gold-digger.
  • Heather (Mena Suvari) is dating a middle-aged surgeon who tries to act younger than his age.
  • Stifler‘s (Seann William Scott) life has gone down the drain — he’s unhappily working as a temp, and isn’t getting laid much. He avoids going to the reunion. At one point, he sleeps with Laurie, a “former hottie” who’s gained weight.
  • Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas) is an “international traveler” and will be scoring with Trish, a bartender who used to go to band camp with Michelle.
  • Stifler’s Mom (Jennifer Coolidge), the original MILF, will be making an appearance.
  • Jim (Jason Biggs) is still married to Michelle (Alyson Hannigan), but his next-door neighbor has a crush on him — and her long-term boyfriend isn’t happy about it. Meanwhile, his sex tape with Nadia (Shannon Elizabeth) has gone viral on YouTube.

It was said sometime last year that writer-directors Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg (Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle) were looking to bring back the cast from the original American Pie movie for a proper sequel.  They have partially succeeded reports The Wrap by signing Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott, and Eugene Levy.  Negotiations are also underway with original cast members Alyson Hannigan, Thomas Ian Nicholas (funky butt lovin’!), Tara Reid, Chris Klein, Mena Suvari, and Jennifer Coolidge for the new film, which will be titled American Reunion. Filming is set to begin on May 24th.

Scott, who played Stifler, recently checked into treatment, his rep told CNN“Seann William Scott has voluntarily admitted himself for proactive treatment to address health and personal issues,” his rep said in a statement. “He appreciates the support of his many fans at this time.”

The Box Office report below doesn’t lie; these movies made a lot of money.  I’ve never seen any of the many DVD sequels because I have a keen sense for crap.  This sequel idea, I could get behind – Pie spawned so many “gross-out” movies that sucked, it’s up to the originals to remind the good people how it’s done…the trick is to hire people with a sense of comedic timing.

Cameron Talks Avatar Re-Release & Sequel

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

Avatar

The highest grossing film of all time and well, just the biggest everything when it comes to movies made it’s way to DVD and Blu-ray this week (it’s still in theaters). It even made its way to our City Strip.  I’m talking about Avatar, and so is James Cameron, who sat down with The LA Times to dish some details on the films re-release and future sequel.  Here are some highlights:

  • Cameron confirms the re-release and extra footage: “We’re working on finishing an additional six minutes of the film — which includes a lot of Weta work — for a theatrical re-release in August.”
  • Avatar 2 will take us into the oceans of Pandora: “We created a broad canvas for the environment of film. That’s not just on Pandora, but throughout the Alpha Centauri AB system. And we expand out across that system and incorporate more into the story – not necessarily in the second film, but more toward a third film…I’m going to be focusing on the ocean on Pandora, which will be equally rich and diverse and crazy and imaginative, but it just won’t be a rain forest. I’m not saying we won’t see what we’ve already seen; we’ll see more of that as well.”

He goes into great detail in this interview and sounds like a straight shooter.  He also comes off as a gigantic nerd, something we appreciate here in the City.  Not you Lucas, you can leave.

The Hangover 2 A Go, Obviously

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

Can lighting strike twice?  The highest grossing R rated comedy of all time is getting a sequel, and no one is surprised.  After test screenings for THE HANGOVER showed people’s love for the flick, a sequel was requested to be written.  I usually don’t like to report on the money making of the stars, but this one is pretty interesting.

The original film’s three key stars Zach Galifianakis, Bradley Cooper and Ed Helms are each set to be paid around $5 million against 4% of first dollar gross. Director/producer Todd Phillips will also be paid around $10 million against 10% along with bonuses should the sequel prove as popular as the original.

The salary jump is a huge jump from the first film where the three stars earned less than $1 million combined for their roles.  The studios didn’t think the raunchy comedy would turn out to be a hit let alone such a major one; they didn’t have sequel option deals in place with the group.  Now it seems, everything is in place, with shooting to start in October for a Memorial Day 2011 release.

I have since seen the film again in the privacy of my own home, and I must say; a second viewing did have me liking it even more.  Perhaps it was the lack of Mr. Cough behind me blasting on my neck.  Then again, maybe it was the home made pizza.  I’ll get back to you on that.
