We last mentioned Rob Zombie‘s next movie, The Lords of Salem, last September where he said he wanted to break away “from anything related to pre-existing material” (Halloween movies are over for him).  So he’s been working on The Lords of Salem which Zombie says: There were twenty people that everyone knows about – obviously all innocent – executed as witches in Salem. The basic premise of the film is that there were a further four who actually were witches, who were killed secretly, and vowed one day to return to wreak havoc on Salem’s descendants. That’s when the movie jumps ahead to the present day and things start to go wrong.  [Pic via Rob Zombie]

Deadline said Zombie was attracted to the setup by an offer of autonomy — he’s given “total control” over script, casting and final cut; unlike working with the Weinstein’s and Dimension. Zombie shares The Shining as an example of a slow-burn film that might not get made by a studio now, which suggests that he might go for a longer, more deliberately paced film while making The Lords of Salem.  Can’t wait.

rob zombieRob Zombie has announced his next project and as I alluded to in the header it’s called The Lords of Salem. The film will be a thriller “set in contemporary Salem, where the inhabitants receive a demonic visit from a 300-year old coven of witches.” Zombie will write the screenplay and plans to shoot the film next year.

Zombie is a talented director and is truly passionate about his work (as heard on his very long director commentaries included in his feature packed DVD’s). The Devil’s Rejects is one of my favourite of all movies and I found his Halloween re-imaginations to be entertaining enough, what I found more interesting with those latter movies was the struggle he went through to make his vision come to life, more on that in a sec.

There was once word that he would be re-making The Blob next, we can rejoice as this seems to be a lost cause and his sights are now set on the original Lords of Salem. While speaking with Deadline, Zombie talked about his his experiences with remaking Halloween as the main reason for why he left The Blob. He said: “I wanted to break away from anything related to pre-existing material. The remake train is getting pretty tired now and when I made Halloween, everybody complained, either that it was too much like the original or too different. I like that people either love or hate what I do because it’s better than being in the middle, which means forgettable. But when you do an original premise, they take it on face value and after three years of not being able to win on Halloween, I just couldn’t go through that again.”

Deadline informs us that Zombie was attracted to the setup by an offer of autonomy — he’s given “total control” over script, casting and final cut; unlike working with the Weinsteins and Dimension. Zombie shares The Shining as an example of a slow-burn film that might not get made by a studio now, which suggests that he might go for a longer, more deliberately paced film while making The Lords of Salem.

halloween II: alternate ending

Monday, December 14th, 2009

h2posterI enjoyed Rob Zombies first take on Halloween a whole bunch.  His gritty style and fearless quest to make me cringe worked.  The second re-imagination however won’t be making the best of 2009 list sadly.  It was good funs don’t get me wrong, but I could sense he was even tired of this story already.  This alternate ending (after the jump) however is pretty different.  Don’t watch it if you have not seen the theatrical version and plan to.  If you don’t care, then have at it.  Something I always add to Rob Zombie post, and will continue tradition here is this; rent and or buy The Devils Rejects.  It’s really one of the best movies of the last decade or more.  The final ten minutes still gets me making a fist McFly Sr. style and telling the world to “bring it!”  Eh, you have to see it.

grande, el superbeasto arrives

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

elsuperI miss the days when movie theaters  would have the nerve to rape our minds with ultra violent or borderline pornographic movies.  Midnights showings where all the weirdos and kids with fake ID’s came out to play.  Alas those days are over, so we are forced to watch such things by hiding in our mother’s basement by the pale moonlight with a bucket of popcorn and a Fresca. Just me?  Well something tells me I won’t be alone when Anchor Bay brings us Rob Zombies first animated feature THE HAUNTED WORLD OF EL SUPERBEASTO directly to DVD and Blu-ray September 22nd.  Talented voice work will be done by the likes of Rosario Dawson, Paul Giamatti, Danny Trejo, Clint Howard, Zombie pals Bill Moseley, Sid Haig, and his lover Sheri Moon Zombie (lucky man).

The story follows the adventures of El Superbeasto, a washed-up Mexican luchador who now finds himself in the very ordinary capacity as producer/director/star of BeastoWorld Enterprises.  Alongside his sultry sidekick and sister Suzi-X they confront an evil villain by the name of Dr. Satan in the mythic world of Monsterland.  Check out the official site for some more insight and fun.  Zombies next feature HALLOWEEN II hits theaters August 28th and if you have been keeping up with his MySpace page you may have come across this fine art featuring Myers and our Superbeasto friend getting along.

Extra Tidbit: Beavis’ hallucination scene in Beavis and Butthead Do America was inspired by artwork drawn by Rob Zombie.

I wish I was close with Dimension Films because maybe they would have sent me this awesome poster instead of Fangoria.  Perhaps they are upset for not replying to their poking on Facebook, get over it boys.  Also, check out Fangoria’s Halloween franchise section.  New trailer after the jump.

Here’s one, according to IMDB; Rob Zombies parents were carnival workers.

The has Rob Zombie explaining that this is an all new look and feel for the series and is a lot more realistic.

michael myers got hurt

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

This is a first look at Michael Myers from HALLOWEEN 2.  I am a fan of what Zombie had to offer with his re-invention or whatever you call it, and I hear that he was able to do whatever the hell he wanted with this sequel.  That could mean a few things, but one thing for sure…nudity.  Pure nudity.  I picked up the 3-Disc edition of his re-invention, the man can make a DVD work that’s for sure.  A 4 hour documentary on the making of, commentary…the whole nine.  Very nice.

H2 happens August 29, 2009.
