PROMETHEUS 2 Has Been Written Apparently

Prometheus 2

I feel like I was one of the few people who actually enjoyed Prometheus.  Sure it didn’t live up to the hype and there could have been some better characterization, but there was enough there for me to enjoy it and buy it when it came out.  Those of you who saw it know that the ending left a lot unexplained yet also left a fairly clear path to where a sequel would go.  Based upon the critical reaction after its release I wasn’t so sure we were actually going to see a sequel, but dollars speak louder than critics and I guess Prometheus made enough dough.

That’s all old news but we finally have a new bit of news to share.  While doing the press rounds for The Counselor (in theaters now) Ridley Scott told Empire that Prometheus 2 has in fact been written but that he didn’t know when he would start shooting.  I did say a bit of news right? Ridley is currently filming his bible epic Exodus for 2014 and has another film planned for 2015.  That means that assuming Prometheus comes after those two, it wouldn’t even start filming until 2016.  The dude is busy.

I can only hope that the people who were bummed about Prometheus will give him a second chance with the sequel, if anything we’ll be in for another gorgeous looking film.  Hopefully the characters will be stronger this time around as well.

PROMETHEUS 2 Has Landed…A Writer

Prometheus 2

We’re going to talk about Prometheus, but first lets talk about Ridley Scott.  In the beginning of his career he crafted two of the most influential science fiction films of all time, Alien and Blade Runner.  Everything about those movies continues to influence filmmakers to this day.  They were masterworks of the genre and yet…it would be 30 years before he returned to science fiction.

I ramble on for some time in this fashion, so we’ve supplied a link below with which you can continue reading.  Wow! What convenience!

2013 Oscar Nominations Announced; Ben Affleck Snubbed for Best Director

Thursday, January 10th, 2013

That’s really all I have to say about the nominations, Ben Affleck got snubbed.  Argo was one of the best movies of the year and he didn’t get nominated for directing (although it’s up for Best Picture).  Don’t take this year’s nominations seriously; Flight got a nomination for writing.

The 85th Academy Awards will take place on February 24th, check out the nominations below:

Book Review: ‘The Book of Alien’ and ‘Aliens: Colonial Marines Technical Manual’ (re-releases)

Tuesday, June 12th, 2012

In honor of the release of Prometheus, Titan Books has re-printed two Alien franchise books which have long been out of print. I was lucky enough to be able to review them.

book-of-alienThe Book of Alien
The Book of Alien by Paul Scanlon and Michael Gross seems to be more of a “art of” book, as it is predominantly full of pre-production artwork. A lot of what is here is familiar to most Alien fans but hopefully there’s a tidbit or two that you’ll discover (or re-discover) that you didn’t know. I for one was unaware that the late Jean “Mœbius” Giraud contributed pre-production art. He was only involved in the production for a short time but some of his concepts survived to be seen in the finished film.

Since this book was originally published in the late 70′s it’s not quite as polished as some people are used to, but don’t let that scare you off. There are a lot of great pieces of production art on display here as well as over a dozen solid pages of text covering many aspects of the production. Unfortunately, I feel that this book falls a bit short of being the definitive book on the making of Alien. I know somewhere out there, a great big coffee table book covering the entire Alien franchise is waiting to be made, hopefully sooner rather than later.

Aliens-Colonial-Marines-Technical-Manual-CoverAliens – Colonial Marines Technical Manual
I’ll be honest right up front. Aliens – Colonial Marines Technical Manual by Lee Brimmicombe-Wood was not the book for me. I’m a huge fan of the Alien franchise as a whole, but I’m much more interested in the behind the scenes sort of stuff. However, if you watched Aliens and thought “wow, I want to know everything there is to know about the USCMC and their equipment” then this is the book for you.

Jammed packed with extremely detailed articles covering weaponry, tanks, ships, armour, spacesuits, and more, this book is a sci-fi technophile’s dream. Almost every question you ever thought to ask about weaponry or equipment is covered in this book. Have you ever wondered what materials make up the M3 Armour Vest the Marine’s wear? It’s in here. Have you ever wanted detailed descriptions of every piece of ordinance carried by the UD-4L Dropship? It’s in here. Have you ever wondered what the maximum generating output of the USS Sulaco’s Westingland A-59 fusion reactor is? It’s in here. Have you ever…well, you get the idea.

The book includes a lot of simple ink illustrations as well as photographs and paintings to fully immerse you in this detailed world. There is also a lot of commentary from fictional marines describing the weapons and equipment in question which really adds to the experience. It’s almost as if this book is actually sitting on some shelf in the Alien universe.

So for me, this book was just something I couldn’t fully get into. However if you enjoy military sci-fi technical jargon you’ll probably love this.

CoF Weekend Preview: Prometheus Has Landed

Friday, June 8th, 2012

Welcome to The CoF Weekend Preview, here is a look at what’s opening this weekend and don’t forget to check out the City of Films SUMMER MOVIE GUIDE so you can plan your summer movie experience. See you here Monday for a new City Strip.

It’s finally here, this will please Kevin.  I’m also looking forward to this film, it’s not really a sequel, and not quite a prequel…but it’s got common threads to the Alien franchise.  Or is it just Alien and not Aliens?  Oh hell, it looks awesome anyways.  It was filmed entirely with 3D cameras so hopefully it won’t look like post conversion garbage the likes of which people who watched Clash of the Titans can tell you about.  Did I mention Charlize Theron is in it?

I really didn’t know they made a sequel to this movie, but here we are on sequel #2.  I don’t think they need to advertise the actors who are doing voices for these movies; kids love this stuff no matter what.  Just say what it is: Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Gloria the Hippo, and Melman the Giraffe doing crazy stuff like talking and handling things without opposable thumbs!

Also Opening: Bel Ami, Safety Not Guaranteed

Thursday, April 26th, 2012

Here is a new featurette for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, one of the most anticipated films of the year.  This is worth watching for anyone looking forward to the film opening in 3D on June 8th.  It’s all about Ridley Scott in this clip, the cast is gushing over working with him and in the process we see a lot of behind the scenes footage, and it looks amazing.

Ridley Scott, director of “Alien” and “Blade Runner,” returns to the genre he helped define. With PROMETHEUS, he creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. Ridley Scott’s PROMETHEUS Has An Amazing New Trailer

Sunday, March 18th, 2012

Late last year we showed you an Alien inspired trailer for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus,  well here’s a new and even better trailer.  Ridley Scott defined the sci-fi horror genre, and it looks like he’s back to claim it.  There’s finally a grasp of the story here and more than enough view of what scope you will be welcoming on the big screen – or even bigger screen with the IMAX release.

Prometheus opens in 3D on June 8th.
