Review: Avatar (2009)

I saw AVATAR this past weekend with no expectations.  Believe it or not, I stayed clear of a lot of hype – you might thank me for not posting a million stories on CoF about it.  This was my FIRST 3D movie; I was unaware of this non-option as well until the nice gal at the Box Office informed me it’s only in 3D.  So was it everything the internet world has said it is?  Yes.  Yes it is.  New technology had to be created to make this movie, James Cameron held out until it was invented.  The man has patience.  He’s told a story that isn’t from a comic, teen novel, or TV show.  This movie is why theater going will never die (so I hope).  There should be a lot of comparisons to Star Wars; Cameron has created just as Lucas did; a new world of exploration, characters and storytelling.  The movie going experience itself was nothing short of extraordinary and I would like to do it again.  This was the event of the year and the best way to send 2009 into history.

Review: Brothers (2009)

brotherspostBrothers (2009)

I still see a young Spider-Man.  Sorry Tobey Maguire.  Although he brings maturity and depth to his role in BROTHERS, a part of me is waiting for him to say “with great power comes…” well you know.  Instead we get a lot of yelling and breaking of things, ah feels like home.

BROTHERS, the new home-from-the-war film has been made with obvious sincerity for the subject matter.  I did somewhat expect an anti-war movie, and it never felt that way.  I don’t support war by any means – and this movie didn’t cater to either side.  It is about the war at home.  War is hell and this movie shows some of the consequences.  Yet, with that major upside to the film, it still seems very unrealistic in terms of its characters.  Maguire, as young as he looks and sounds does bring that nervousness with him to the role and you feel it.  Director Sheridan and Maguire run things well here, running a line of tension through the film that explodes at the end; it really had people asking aloud “what’s going to happen.” (Ssshhh, watch and find out people!).

Review: Ninja Assassin (2009)

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

ninjassNINJA ASSASSIN is improbable and completely unrealistic; it gave me everything I would come to expect from a movie titled NINJA ASSASSIN, lots of blood and a light story.  I couldn’t imagine nor do I want to, roles in this film filled by any well known actors.  By the end of this film we still don’t care about any of the characters, and I am sure the makers of the film knew this would be the case.  We came for ass kicking, not to chew bubblegum.

Synopsis: Raizo is one of the deadliest assassins in the world. Taken from the streets as a child, he was transformed into a trained killer by the Ozunu Clan, a secret society whose very existence is considered a myth. But haunted by the merciless execution of his friend by the Clan, Raizo breaks free from them…and vanishes. Now he waits, preparing to exact his revenge.

Review: Precious (2009)

It’s not the best time to have at the movies this year, but it’s one of the best films you will see.  Precious is a hard kick to the gut – with such gritty realism, the movie plays out with relentless torture.  Torture for the characters and the audience.  Most dramatic undertakings in any year of filmmaking will at least try and provide people with a final feeling of relief and warmth.  This is not one of those movies, nor should it be.  The movie is honest and emotionally charged, and you can’t find that these days from a lot of other movies who tend to take the high road and please the soul instead of challenging it.

Review: Where The Wild Things Are (2009)

Where the Wild Things Are

Where the Wild Things Are

To fully understand the depth of Where The Wild Things Are, it’s important to know the history behind it.  Over the last few years I found myself angered to hear what was happening with the movie and thought I would share that with you now before the review.  Spike Jonze stepped up with a vision, something different – and people and the studios decide to take turns pissing on it, development hell is another way to sum things up.  Where the Wild Things Are started its development life in the early 1980s, originally to be an animated feature by Disney that would have blended traditionally animated characters with computer-generated settings.  You can see cut of that here.

tarantino mix tape & superman

Monday, May 4th, 2009

Odd title I know, but it’s true.  Webby Award nominated media artist Eclectic Method has thrown all of Quentin Tarantino’s movies in a blender and created the “TARANTINO Mix Tape.” (below) This came at me with some other news regarding Tarantino’s love for Bryan Singers SUPERMAN RETURNS.  I enjoyed that movie, but it’s been a few years and now looking back…I can see why a lot of people hated it.  So that being said, Tarantino has had enough with the naysayers and intends to release a “20 page review” of the film.  Seriously.

NYT has a new interview with Quentin Tarantino where Tarantino confesses that Inglorious Basterds is the “hardest film” he’s ever made. IB clocks in at over 2 hours and 30 minutes, and was cast and shot in time for this month’s Cannes. When asked about the quick production schedule, he frankly responds…

“I wanted to have a masterpiece before the decades out.”  We will be the judge of that when Inglorious Basterds hits August 21 2009.

Review: Watchmen (2009)

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

watchsimps

I watched the Watchmen.  God I’m good, and so was the movie.  I don’t like to do all out reviews because well why should my opinion out way those of others?  So what I will do is give a to the point review of what I thought about it.  First off let me start off by saying that the hype was worth it.  All the annoying trailers and TV Spots that ruin the moments when they come (remember in Dark Knight how Gordon was”dead”, well they had not got to the scene with him going through jokers pocket of goodies…so you knew he wasn’t!, pissed me right off) didn’t seem to hurt the movie.  It was in fact nothing like I have seen before, so I am pleased.

I saw the noon show to stay clear of the fat bearded nerds arguing over costume colors and accents.  So all in all the viewing itself was the best I could hope for.  Additionally I will say that everything including music, effects, acting, sound, and writing was all top notch.  I should also mention that I have not read the graphic novel at this point.  I will however do that soon enough.  “But Graham you can’t possibly know the material source therefore your opinion of the watchmen falls flat.” (says the fat bearded man) Well no you see, I watch movies because they are movies, not because they are based on books or other such things.  I have never read a Harry Potter book either, and actually don’t plan to considering the material is not something I wish to read, the movies on the other hand are fun and adventurous, like me!  So I will not be getting into an adaptation hissy fit with anyone today.

Moving on, after all is said and done; I was left with one hell of a time.  This movie is dark, and I mean dark.  The violence and subject matter is well beyond anything we have seen in a super hero movie.  These heroes have a life, something we don’t see too often.   I was reminded in a sense of one of the great movies of our time, SIN CITY.  Adult characters living adult lives, I love it.  These are not your kid’s heroes, nor should they be.  I do have some questions however, and sure enough all will be answered after a few more viewings.  If there is one thing this movie will leave you with it is the want to watch it again, and I can’t wait.

Screenwriter David Hayter worked on this for almost a decade, and it seems his hard work may or may not pay off as seen in a lot of people’s eyes.  The movie made a decent amount of money opening weekend for an R and a nobody cast compared to other comic movies.  Hayter has written a letter to fans on HardcoreNerdity, where he asks for anyone who liked the film to return to the theater to see it again.

“If the film made you think. Or argue with your friends. If it inspired a debate about the nature of man, or vigilante justice, or the horror of Nixon abolishing term limits. If you laughed at Bowie hanging with Adrian at Studio 54, or the Silhouette kissing that nurse. Please go see the movie again next weekend. You have to understand, everyone is watching to see how the film will do in its second week. If you care about movies that have a brain, or balls, (and this film’s got both, literally), or true adaptations — And if you’re thinking of seeing it again anyway, please go back this weekend, Friday or Saturday night. Demonstrate the power of the fans, because it’ll help let the people who pay for these movies know what we’d like to see. Because if it drops off the radar after the first weekend, they will never allow a film like this to be made again.”

Read it all.
