Michael Shannon Was In GROUNDHOG DAY

shannon

During my annual viewing of Groundhog Day this year I actually noticed something new, this movie is so layered it scares me.

During the party scene, where Murray is wooing his way into bed with Andie MacDowell, he is approached by a newly married couple.  It’s Michael Shannon as Fred the groom; a much younger Shannon with a seldom seen smile on his mug.  God he loves Wrestlemania.  Watch:

return

Linda Cardellini should be a bigger stay in my opinion, but this is coming from a guy who has had a crush on her ever since she put the moves on Corey on Boy Meets World [here].  She’s done a lot more than that over the years like starring in Freaks & Geeks, Brokeback Mountain, and even Scooby-Doo movies (she was great on ER too).

In Return she plays a woman on the verge, on the verge of what is the question I’m asking myself.  She’s returned home from war to her husband (Michael Shannon) and kids after a long deployment and struggles to find her place in a life she no longer recognizes.  Watching the trailer below you can see why she received praise last year at Cannes for her subtle performance.

Michael Shannon gave a similar performance in 2011′s Take Shelter don’t you think?  Find out when Return hits theaters February 10, and will be available on iTunes starting February 28.

rush

We have the fantastic first trailer for David Koepp’s Premium Rush starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Michael Shannon.  Levitt is a bike messenger who gets involved in a chase across New York City.

David Koepp is a very popular (and high paid) writer (Jurassic Park, Carlito’s Way, Spider-Man) who continues to try to transition in feature filmmaking.  Premium Rush might just take him there, the intense trailer below has the makings of a great chase movie; Premium Rush hits theaters on January 13th 2012.

gunpreacherGerard Butler stars in Machine Gun Preacher – the story of Sam Childers, a former drug-dealing biker tough guy who found God and became a crusader for hundreds of Sudanese children who’ve been forced to become soldiers.  This is the trailer, the movie also stars Michelle Monaghan and Michael Shannon and was directed by Marc Forster (Quantum of Solace, Finding Neverland).

I can’t say the trailer did a good job getting me excited for this flick; it looks like a more heartfelt version of Hobo with a Shotgun.  The tagline on the poster also says “hope if the greatest weapon of all”.  Well if that were true, why is Butler holding a massive gun and blowing up people in the movie?  I’d say badassery is the greatest hope but the studio didn’t ask me.

The movie is set to be released on September 23rd. Check out the trailer below:

manofsteel

The official synopsis for Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel has arrived online via ComicBookMovie, it is expected the film will follow Superman’s origins as Clark Kent decides to become Superman but some folks will need more than that to stay awake during an action movie.  We reported that Michael Shannon will star in the role of General Zod, so ass will be kicked.  So let’s get to the plot:

In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time. Clark Kent/Kal-El (Cavill) is a young twentysomething journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond anyone’s imagination. Transported to Earth years ago from Krypton, an advanced alien planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question – Why am I here? Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha (Lane) and Jonathan Kent (Costner), Clark soon discovers that having super abilities means making very difficult decisions. But when the world needs stability the most, it comes under attack. Will his abilities be used to maintain peace or ultimately used to divide and conquer? Clark must become the hero known as “Superman,” not only to shine as the world’s last beacon of hope but to protect the ones he loves.

The Man of Steel arrives June 14, 2013.

The Man of Steel Won’t Fly Until 2013

Friday, July 22nd, 2011

Warner Bros has changed the planned December 2012 release date for Man of Steel, the next reboot of Superman to a June 14, 2013 release. The Zack Snyder-directed reboot has had some big casting news [see our coverage] and I thought a December release would have been nice for Superman, it’s not to be.

Deadline reports that Warner Bros has spent a fortune defending its Superman rights, some say up to $25M in legal fees, but right now it looks like there will be a splitting of rights between the creator estates and DC Comics.

Speaking of heroes, I was looking at some dates for next year and it looks like The Amazing Spider-Man comes out July 3rd and The Dark Knight Rises follows 2 weeks later on June 20th.  It’s going to be a very big summer.

Take Shelter

Here’s a great poster for Jeff Nichols‘s psychological drama Take Shelter starring the always amazing Michael Shannon.  You can watch the trailer for the film below as well, and check out the teaser for Boardwalk Empire season we posted over here.  Shannon is in for a very big year and it continues with Man of Steel next year when he plays Zod [see].  He’s one of my favorites and I can’t wait to see Take Shelter, it looks like I won’t have to wait long as the film is being released in September.  Trailer:

bwalkBoardwalk Empire Season 2 has been scheduled to air in fall 2011, in the mean time we can look forward to awesome trailers like the one below.  Boardwalk Empire had a very impressive first season, following resounding critical acclaim and high viewer numbers for the series, HBO has renewed Boardwalk Empire for a second season.  A show that has contributions from the likes of Martin Scorsese (Goodfellas) and Terence Winter (The Sopranos), and a cast that includes Steve Buscemi and Michael Shannon, you just know it’s going to succeed.  This show was nothing short of amazing, I can’t wait for season 2.
