The greatest show of all time enters its 23rd season next week continuing as the longest running sitcom ever on TV and they will even celebrate 500 episodes in 2012. Every so often when my friends and I start talking about The Simpsons, it’s common to suggest an all Simpsons all the time channel; they have enough episodes, specials, and music videos to do so. Now News Corp. Chief Operating Officer Chase Carey thinks that this could end up being a reality. Earlier this week he said the animated series showed no signs “no signs of slowing down”. Carey said there have been a “number of meetings” to determine how to capitalize on its library of episodes of The Simpsons and he mentioned a digital channel featuring nothing but Homer and the gang as being a possibility. Carey said it is incumbent on the company to take advantage of a show that is “unique in television with a volume too that is unprecedented”.
It could take a few more years for this to launch (even more episodes!), or even when the show stops altogether. The reports points out that “the show is still in production and will have to meet the syndication deals established by its current order.” When the show stops production “second cycle sales of repeat episodes can be sold and that’s when such a channel could become a possibility.”
This channel would be awesome, but I think Fox and company love money, and DVD/Blu-ray sales would likely diminish if this were to happen. What would be cool is episodes on the channel with commentary and other features you see on the DVD’s, but again, that means less money for them. Subscription maybe? Steaming only? We have to wait and see.
Would you watch a full time Simpsons channel? Do I need to ask this?
