The greatest show of all time enters its 23rd season next week continuing as the longest running sitcom ever on TV and they will even celebrate 500 episodes in 2012.  Every so often when my friends and I start talking about The Simpsons, it’s common to suggest an all Simpsons all the time channel; they have enough episodes, specials, and music videos to do so.  Now News Corp. Chief Operating Officer Chase Carey thinks that this could end up being a reality. Earlier this week he said the animated series showed no signs “no signs of slowing down”. [sliceofscifi]

Carey said there have been a “number of meetings” to determine how to capitalize on its library of episodes of The Simpsons and he mentioned a digital channel featuring nothing but Homer and the gang as being a possibility. Carey said it is incumbent on the company to take advantage of a show that is “unique in television with a volume too that is unprecedented”.

It could take a few more years for this to launch (even more episodes!), or even when the show stops altogether.  The reports points out that “the show is still in production and will have to meet the syndication deals established by its current order.” When the show stops production “second cycle sales of repeat episodes can be sold and that’s when such a channel could become a possibility.”

This channel would be awesome, but I think Fox and company love money, and DVD/Blu-ray sales would likely diminish if this were to happen.  What would be cool is episodes on the channel with commentary and other features you see on the DVD’s, but again, that means less money for them.  Subscription maybe?  Steaming only?  We have to wait and see.

Would you watch a full time Simpsons channel?  Do I need to ask this?

Ricky Gervais Loves The Simpsons

Ricky Gervais Simpsons

Ricky Gervais has said that The Simpsons is the best TV show of all time, a sediment I’d have to agree with.  It didn’t take long for Matt Groening to extend an invitation to Gervais after many of the creators and writers found they shared a love for The Office – saying: “Everybody on The Simpsons is a fan of The Office – it’s one of the best shows on TV in the last decade.”

Ricky Gervais went on to write and star in The Simpsons episode “Homer Simpson, This Is Your Wife” voicing the character Charles Heathbar [see video below].  He guest starred as himself in the Season 22 episode “Angry Dad – The Movie“.  A 2008 article [here], Entertainment Weekly named Gervais one of the sixteen best Simpsons guest stars.

Before the episode air, Gervais did an interview with Entertainment Weekly, where he picks his favorite episodes! The man knows his stuff:

I didn’t think there was anything more Ricky Gervais could say or do for people such as myself to like him even more.  Then he went and revealed that he is a not just a fan of The Simpsons, but regards it as the best TV show of all time.

Matt Groening extended an invitation to Gervais after many of the creators and writers found they shared a love for The Office – saying: “Everybody on The Simpsons is a fan of The Office – it’s one of the best shows on TV in the last decade.” Where Ricky replied:   “This the most intimidating project of my career. The Simpsons is the greatest TV show of all time.” Gervais did an interview with UNCUT where he listed his top 10 sitcoms of all time [see list here] and guess who made #1? (more…)

Matt Groening and Al Jean told Morgan Spurlock (who’s making a Simpsons Doc) have ruled out making a second Simpsons movie, at least not until the TV series finally wraps.  Groening says:

“It took 18 years to get around to doing the movie, we got very frustrated. We thought it would take two years but it ended up taking four. Some day maybe we’ll do another one — but don’t hold your breath.” The show in it’s 21st season has taken a lot from fans and critics about its longevity and staying fresh.  Groening adds: “We cannot predict the end because we can’t believe we are still here today,” Jean added, “We are contracted to do two more seasons following this one. I gave up predicting the end a long time ago.” [Variety]

Also as you can see to your left, Marge Simpson will bare it all for Playboy next month.  Hugh Hefner teased a while back on Twitter about a possible Marge-Playboy collaboration.  Marge will be featured in a three-page pictorial complete with an interview and a data sheet to mark The Simpsons 20th anniversary.
