Deadline reports that Leonardo DiCaprio is attached to star in a remake of the 1974 James Caan movie The Gambler. The drama is about an “academic whose gambling addiction begins to get the best of him. His gambling addiction got to the point where he convinces a student athlete to shave points so he can win a bet, and the high he experiences from risking everything takes him into even darker places.”  The new script is being penned by William Monahan (The Departed) and Martin Scorsese is said to be directing.  Excuse me for being skeptical about this project ever happening, but check this:

Martin Scorsese‘s 3D film Hugo has a trailer for your viewing pleasure below, it’s something very different from the legendary director and will be interesting to see how it looks on the big screen.  The trailer to be honest I felt was a little erratic, it’s all over the place as you will see.  It was nice to see the great cast in action, the cast includes Chloe Grace Moretz, Asa Butterfield, Sacha Baron Cohen, Ben Kingsley, Jude Law, Ray Winstone, Christopher Lee, Helen McCrory, Richard Griffiths, Frances de la Tour, Emily Mortimer and Michael Stuhlbarg.

Hugo tells the story of an orphan boy living a secret life in the walls of a Paris train station. With the help of an eccentric girl, he searches for the answer to a mystery linking the father he recently lost, the ill-tempered toy shop owner living below him and a heart shaped lock, seemingly without a key.

The film opens up on November 23rd 2011, check out the trailer below:

Martin Scorsese‘s upcoming 3D family film Hugo Cabret has been retitled, it will now be called Hugo.   The movie hits November 23, 2011.  This will be Scorsese’s first movie aimed at kids; it will be interesting to see what he can bring to the screen with this one.  More on the movie here.

In other news, according to Hugh Jackman filming starts this October on The Wolverine.  This is a little excerpt from a radio interview that we found on indiewire: “We shoot in October, so it will probably come out a year after that. That’s usually around the timeline”. So I guess this movie is actually happening, and Jackman is a reporter now too.

Finally, Marvel Studios has announced they are committed to making Thor 2, with Chris Hemsworth set to reprise his role in the lead. Deadline reports that Kenneth Branagh will not be directing the sequel.  So far the film has grossed $437 million and counting worldwide.  A release date will be scheduled for Thor 2 for sometime during summer 2013. Iron Man 3 has already been slated for May 3, 2013…it’s another summer of over hyped superhero movies baby!

scorsese dicaprioOver the last 24 hours a lot of news has been shared with us about the next Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio picture, people noticed our love for both of them, we appreciate that.  Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio will make The Wolf of Wall Street, an indie film this time around, but won’t be Scorsese’s next film (after Hugo Cabret).  THR reports that will be Silence, Scorsese’s adaptation of the Shusaku Endo novel that the director has talked about for years.

The Wolf of Wall Street follows a script is by Boardwalk Empire producer Terence Winter based on the novel of the same name by Jordan Belfort.  This is all fine Mr. Scorsese, but what about the Frank Sintra biopic [here] and The Irishman [here] with De Niro?  Those are in my movie bucket list you know.  So we wait.

Book Synopsis:
Belfort, who founded one of the first and largest chop shop brokerage firms in 1987, was banned from the securities business for life by 1994, and later went to jail for fraud and money-laundering, delivers a memoir that reads like fiction. It covers his decade of success with straightforward accounts of how he worked with managers of obscure companies to acquire large amounts of stock with minimal public disclosure, then pumped up the price and sold it, so he and the insiders made large profits while public investors usually lost. Profits were laundered through purchase of legitimate businesses and cash deposits in Swiss banks. There is only brief mention of Belfort’s life before Wall Street or events since 1997. The book’s main topic is the vast amount of sex, drugs and risky physical behavior Belfort managed to survive. As might be expected in the autobiography of a veteran con man with movie rights already sold, it’s hard to know how much to believe.

scorseseOnce again, things that could’ve been brought to my attention YESTERDAY!

A reader was kind enough to send over this great post today, over at The Daily Beast Martin Scorsese lists and discusses his 11 scariest horror movies of all time. I love a good list, and if it’s by a great person, even better. The list is below, chase this link to see what he had to say about each. Halloween was yesterday, but I’m still sick from too many Coffee Crisps, so this still counts.

1. The Haunting (1963) 2. Isle of the Dead 3. The Uninvited
4. The Entity 5. Dead of Night 6. The Changeling (1980)
7. The Shining 8. The Exorcist 9. Night of the Demon
10. The Innocents 11. Psycho

Goodfellas TV Series Is A Prequel

Goodfellas

Author Nicholas Pileggi (Wise Guy) and director Martin Scorsese announced a few months ago that they were working on a Goodfellas television series. Now, Pileggi has new details; firstly the series will go back to Henry Hill’s early days and act as a prequel to the film. Second, Martin Scorsese is involved in some way or another. Pileggi is currently writing the pilot script.

Pileggi said the following:

We’re trying [to develop the TV series]. I want to do it, Marty wants to do it, Warner Bros wants to do it. Of course, you can’t pick up from Goodfellas, since we murdered everybody, or rather, everybody was murdered! There’s nobody left. But I think we’re going to figure out a way to do the early years – sort of a prequel. The part of the movie people often like best is the opening third, where all the funny stuff is happening, and there’s so much we could fit in.

Not sure how I feel about the prequel aspect, how many years are we talking? Henry was not even a teen when he was working for the mob, and then we saw his life over the years (the good parts anyways). Adding more stories to the already perfect Goodfellas isn’t really needed. Although, The Sopranos went off the air in 2007, I could really use a gangster fix by now. What do you wise guys think? Via: Digital Spy

goodfellas

One dog goes one way, the other dog goes the other way, and this guy's sayin', Whadda ya want from me?

If you’re new to The City of Films (hi there), then you may not know how obsessed we are with Goodfellas.  It’s a perfect film and deserves daily recognition for everything it’s done for influences on just about everything considered entertainment today.  Too much?  I don’t think so.

GoodFellas based on the bestseller ‘Wiseguy’, by Nicholas Pileggi and directed by Martin Scorsese (also known as the man) is turning 20, to mark the film’s anniversary, GQ interviewed nearly sixty members of the cast and crew, along with some noteworthy admirers of the picture.  It’s an extensive look back that worth the read, have fun everybody!  Now go home and get your fuckin’ shinebox.  [Check it out]

Liotta (Henry Hill): I think I was the first person that Marty met, but it took maybe a year. It was a very long process.   I was new. I’d only done three movies at the time. All I heard was that the studio wanted somebody else—”What about this?” “What about Eddie Murphy?”

Isiah Whitlock, Jr. (Doctor): If I start watching it, I’ll be up all night. Sometimes I hate to put the movie on because it’s like, I’ve got shit to do.
