scorsese dicaprioOver the last 24 hours a lot of news has been shared with us about the next Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio picture, people noticed our love for both of them, we appreciate that.  Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio will make The Wolf of Wall Street, an indie film this time around, but won’t be Scorsese’s next film (after Hugo Cabret).  THR reports that will be Silence, Scorsese’s adaptation of the Shusaku Endo novel that the director has talked about for years.

The Wolf of Wall Street follows a script is by Boardwalk Empire producer Terence Winter based on the novel of the same name by Jordan Belfort.  This is all fine Mr. Scorsese, but what about the Frank Sintra biopic [here] and The Irishman [here] with De Niro?  Those are in my movie bucket list you know.  So we wait.

Book Synopsis:
Belfort, who founded one of the first and largest chop shop brokerage firms in 1987, was banned from the securities business for life by 1994, and later went to jail for fraud and money-laundering, delivers a memoir that reads like fiction. It covers his decade of success with straightforward accounts of how he worked with managers of obscure companies to acquire large amounts of stock with minimal public disclosure, then pumped up the price and sold it, so he and the insiders made large profits while public investors usually lost. Profits were laundered through purchase of legitimate businesses and cash deposits in Swiss banks. There is only brief mention of Belfort’s life before Wall Street or events since 1997. The book’s main topic is the vast amount of sex, drugs and risky physical behavior Belfort managed to survive. As might be expected in the autobiography of a veteran con man with movie rights already sold, it’s hard to know how much to believe.

Reaction: Inception (2010)

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

InceptionYou mustn’t be afraid to dream a little bigger, darling.

Note: CoF reactions are always spoiler free.  We will now be making the habit of condensing all the good things you normally find in a well written review into what we call a ‘Reaction’.  Who are we to criticize someone else art?  So we will just talk about the overall experience, seems fair.

Last week I posted an article titled ‘Why Everyone Should See Inception‘.  I wasn’t just blowing smoke, I am still out there urging people to take the trip to their local cinema and check this one out.  The reason I wrote the article before I even saw the movie I should explain, is because every once in a while and not often, a movie will be released you know you will enjoy (the last one for me being Shutter Island).   My main case in the article was that Inception was original and that moviegoers should be supporting this kind of movie.  Well, I saw Inception opening weekend with a packed house of believers and saying it met my premature hype and expectations would be too obvious.  Would it be less obvious if I said it exceeded them in every way?  Well it did. Why Everyone Should See Inception

inception

Dreams feel real while we’re in them.
It’s only when we wake up that we realize something was actually strange.

It’s said that Christopher Nolan spent ten years writing Inception.  To say the expectations for the film are high is a severe understatement.  His last film The Dark Knight went on to become one of the most successful movies of all time and garner the highest praise for any comic book adaptation ever.  Nolan succeeded in resuscitating Batman for our generation, and now I must declare he is doing the same with our movies.  Creating something this original and on such an epic scale should be praised and sought after.  No matter how high your personal expectations for Inception may be, the film deserves your attention for many reasons, everyone should see Inception. inception cast

One of the movies to see in 2010 is Christopher Nolan’s Inception.  I am getting as excited to this as I was to see his Dark Knight.  Inception looks to be one fun ride, and above all it’s an original idea!  Warner Bros. released some photos for the film seen here in a nice interview with the LA Times, where it’s called — Hollywood’s first existential heist film. Jump for the photos. (more…)

Inception Plot And Run Time Confirmed

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Is it Nolan day or something?  Anything that Christopher Nolan touches seems to turn to gold.  The CoF staff is pretty excited and curious what the man has up his sleeve for INCEPTION.  And I haven’t asked them, but I am pretty sure we would all leave our significant others for Leonardo Dicaprio.  Here’s some news about Inception, NO spoilers.

The February issue of Empire Magazine  mentions in the “On-Set Preview” section, that Christopher Nolan has had the the idea for the movie brewing in his head for quite a while, conceptualizing the idea when he was only 16 years old. (more…)

Shutter Island is Scorcese’s Best Debut

Sunday, February 21st, 2010
"Holy sh*t Leo, we're number one!"

"Holy s**t Leo, we're number one!"

Don’t take my review for it, many people wanted to get spooked this weekend as Shutter Island cruised to an easy box office win this weekend, more than doubling its next closest competition. The $40 million weekend is by far the best in Martin Scorsese‘s career, and it marks a new record  for Leonardo DiCaprio, as well; a great beginning for a movie shelved for nearly half a year.

Soon to face off with Shutter will be Alice in Wonderland (March 5th) and next week Cop Out (this looks really just awful) and The Crazies (next week).  Anyway, the lack of audience for the other movies propelled Avatar back into third place. Its $16 million weekend is its slowest, and now that we know the DVD is due in two months, we can begin to see the finish line for this one, just short of $750 million domestic and $2.5 billion world wide.

Review: Shutter Island (2010)

We don’t know how she got out of her room. It’s as if she evaporated, straight through the walls. – Dr. John Cawley

**This is a SPOILER FREE Review**

It’s safe to say that the partnership between DiCaprio and Scorsese has been a productive one for the famed director – Gangs of New York got 10 Oscar nominations, The Aviator got 11 nods (and 5 wins), and The Departed got 5 nominations and won 4, including Best Picture and Marty’s long-coveted Best Director Oscar [video].  So when it was told that the team was going at it again for Shutter Island, this fan was going to be first in line.  Did it live up to my own hype? It sounded like perfect thriller material, straight out of the third act of Scorsese’s Cape Fear remake, and an ideal fit for the legendary filmmaker.  I am glad to say I was first in line, last to leave and very satisfied.

inception teaser #2

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

Here is another trailer for Christopher Nolan’s Inception (after the break), and I am getting pretty excited having had memories of when The Matrix while I viewed this.  I have no idea what is going on in this trailer, and that’s the way I likes it; confusing and cool.  Inception opens in theaters and IMAX July 2010.

Revolutionary Road

Revolutionary Road (2008)

My first thought watching Revolutionary Road was “what if Jack had lived?” Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet return together a decade after we saw Titanic take over the world.  This time they are living the American Dream in 1955 suburbia.  Frank and April Wheeler, in the seventh year of their marriage, have fallen into a life that appears to most as being perfect. They live in the Connecticut with two young children. Frank commutes to New York City where he works in an office job that he hates while April stays at home as a housewife which is a constant reminder of the acting life she gave up on.  One day, April suggests that they move to Paris – a city where Frank visited during the war and loved, but where April has never been – as a means to rejuvenate their life.  Initially skeptical, Frank ultimately agrees to April’s plan. When circumstances change around the Wheelers, April decides she will do whatever she has to get herself out of her unhappy existence.

The Scene Stealer (after the jump) from Revolutionary Road does include DiCaprio and Winslet, who are fantastic throughout the film, but this scene is more to do with Michael Shannon’s character John Givings.  He is simply scary in this role as a former mathematician who is now under psychiatric care in a mental institution. John has no inhibition about asking the Wheelers direct personal questions and offering his blunt assessment of their dissatisfaction with marriage, work, and life; his parents are horrified, but the Wheelers admire him for his candor. However, when John learns the Wheelers have canceled their move to Paris, he becomes agitated and begins to insult them, saying he feels sorry for them.
