Cut To The Chase Reviews from The City of Films are spoiler free ‘Reviews Abridged For Your Pleasure’. Quick, concise, and sometimes entertaining opinions on the go!
Kevin Smith has reinvented himself and made a very grown up movie. Red State is part horror, part action and heavily political; and with elements of the genres mixed together, we get a terrific movie that deserves attention even if you were a septic like myself prior to its viewing.
Set in Middle America, a group of teens receive an online invitation for sex; the tables are turned on them as they are forces to face justice at the hands of fundamentalists (think Fred Phelps and his crew with a whole lot of fire power).
Red State will piss off a lot of people, if it hasn’t already. The movie seems to take a different direction every 20 minutes with its few redeeming characters and for the many pages of script, it’s a shame that we didn’t get more show instead of tell. The acting from the cast deserves recognition, namely Michael Parks (From Dusk Till Dawn) and Melissa Leo (Frozen River). Along with the great cinematography, editing, and writing, Smith give us one hell of an experience with his direction. Red State still may not be Kevin Smith’s best film (Chasing Amy), but it is certainly his most mature and I can’t wait to see if he continues on this more artistic path.
Score: 3.5/5

Lionsgate has released a new trailer for Kevin Smith’s religious thriller Red State. The trailer is NSFW so be warned if you work in a day care. The film is set to hit VOD on September 1st, followed by a theatrical release. It will now also include a Los Angeles theatrical run from August 19th to the 25th at the New Beverly Cinema. This officially qualifying the film for the Academy Awards [see].
If you don’t know the story already about the strange and intriguing actions taken by Smith when it came to distributing this film, here it is in a nutshell: Kevin Smith planned to auction off the rights to Red State to distributors attending his Sundance screening of the film, he changed his mind and informed his audience that he was unable to continue to use the festival to look for a distributor for the film after the audience’s reaction to his film. “…soon after the film played to a good but not great reaction in its world premiere, Smith ditched the idea of a public sale and announced to the audience (after auctioning the film to himself for $20) that he would release the film on his own in October.” — Reporter John Horn, observer at the live-auction [see].

Click for poster.
If there was ever a director in need of reinventing himself, Kevin Smith would be my top choice. I haven’t always been a strong supporter of his work of the last few years, but I will hand it to him, this trailer for Red State has me interested in his work again. Not a lot is known about the project, but check out the poster and trailer for yourself. Also, anything with John Goodman is instant viewing for me.
The Sundance festival film guide states: Red State begins by following three horny high school boys who come across an online ad from an older woman looking for a gang bang. Boys being boys, they hit the road to satisfy their libidinal urges. But what begins as a fantasy takes a dark turn as they come face-to-face with a terrifying “holy” force with a fatal agenda. I guess Kevin Smith didn’t read my article asking him to GROW UP, because he is at it again. Smith has unleashed furious rants at critics after his new film Cop Out received next to no positive reviews (was anyone surprised?) – insisting he’d rather see members of the public give opinion instead of “nasty” movie experts. The “comedy”, starring Bruce Willis was released last month and has been slated by reviewers, with many claiming the movie is let down by a weak script, old/bad jokes and a shitty plot. Smith is fuming about the unflattering comments, insisting he feels like his film has been “bullied” – and has vowed to force critics to pay to review his movies from now on.

Smith in "Catch and Release". Too easy.

The year was 1994. Kevin Smith took Sundance and Cannes by storm with his low budget and highly intellectual comedy Clerks. Miramax took on the film and it was smooth sailing from there. Awards and praise for the film and filmmaker with future rankings such as “number 34 on Bravo’s 100 Funniest Movies” [list]. It has since spawned comics, toys, a sequel and millions of fanboys for Kevin Smith. This film ranks high for me and has the privilege above all other Kevin Smith films as being his best work with Chasing Amy coming in at a strong second. Brought to you by:

Dweebs Geeks & Weirdos – When I was maybe 10 my older brother refused to play this game with me. He kept it out in his room all the time and told me I wasn’t old enough to play. I was gutted. One day he came into my room and handed me the game…”it’s all yours”. I got my best friend to run on over, we set it all up and played. About 5 minutes later the game was given to the charity pile in our spare room. What a shitty game. Thanks brother.
Here are today’s interesting links found on the series of tubes:
