I’ve been waiting for this trailer patiently, I can breathe now. Paramount Pictures has released the first trailer for writer/director Jason Reitman’s (Juno, Thank you for Smoking) new film Labor Day. The movie is based on the Joyce Maynard novel of the same name.
On a back-to-school shopping trip, Henry (Gattlin Griffith) and his mother (Kate Winslet) encounter Frank Chambers (Josh Brolin), a man both intimidating and clearly in need of help, who convinces them to take him into their home and later is revealed to be an escaped convict. The events of this long Labor Day weekend will shape them for the rest of their lives.
The trailer does a very good job at creating a tension between the characters that you just know is going to amount to something at the end of this weekend they are having. It had a lot of positive buzz after its showing at TFF, and I’d watch anything with Kate Winslet – so it’s a done deal.
The film also stars J.K. Simmons, Clark Gregg, James Van Der Beek, and Tobey Maguire.
Labor Day opens in limited release on December 25th and expands on January 31st, watch the trailer below:
My lady and I have an understanding; I get to have a healthy obsession for Kate Winslet and she gets to go on Pinterest while I’m watching Real Time with Bill Maher. Thankfully I get to work on this here website where I can also post any and all Kate Winslet news, so here we have the first image of her upcoming film Labor Day. Jason Reitman (Juno, Up in the Air) wrote and directed the movie based on the novel Labor Day by Joyce Maynard.
Set in 1987 over the late summer holiday weekend, Labor Day opens with divorced, depressed single mom Adele clothes shopping with her 13-year-old son, Henry. They encounter a large, fearsome man — who also happens to be bleeding badly. He asks for a ride, and against all judgment, they give him one. As police search town for the escaped convict, the mother and son gradually learn his true story and their options become more and more limited.
It will be interesting to see how Reitman handles a character drama/thriller like this, could be a refreshing turn for the great director. The film will also involves flashback and flashforwards, with Tobey Maguire playing the grown-up version of the young boy. The film also stars Gattlin Griffith, J.K. Simmons, Clark Gregg, and James Van Der Beek.
Labor Day opens in limited release on December 25th before expanding wide on January 31st.
FYI: My favorite Winslet roles are Little Children, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Revolutionary Road, and Contagion.

The Alamo Drafthouse has a strict no-texting policy that if you don’t agree with, you’re wrong. The Drafthouse does great PSAs (the original angry texter is under the Patton Oswalt video below) so while in Austin to promote Young Adult, director Jason Reitman and star Patton Oswalt made this “Don’t Talk” PSA for them. Enjoy:
Here is the first movie trailer for the Jason Reitman directed, Diablo Cody scripted film Young Adult, starring Charliz Theron, Patton Oswalt, Patrick Wilson and Elizabeth Reaser. Reitman has made some great films over the last few years including Thank you for Smoking, Juno, and Up in the Air. Diablo Cody hit a high with her script for Juno, winning herself an Oscar for her efforts. So needless to say there is a lot of hype and expectations to be had here.
Young Adult as you will see below looks like a winner, but I am a big fan of Patton Oswalt and as soon as he showed up in trailer I was sold.
Charlize Theron plays Mavis Gary, a writer of teen literature who returns to her small hometown to relive her glory days and attempt to reclaim her happily married high school sweetheart. When returning home proves more difficult than she thought, Mavis forms an unusual bond with a former classmate (Patton Oswalt) who hasn’t quite gotten over high school, either.
