No Avatar Sequel Until At Least 2014
August 26th, 2010 by The Mayor

AvatarIn an interview with the New York Post, director James Cameron said he’s still in the “notes” stage of his production of Avatar 2, and the sequel won’t be completed until at least 2014. But it may be worth the wait, since the director plans on filming a third film at the same time.  He goes on to burn The Matrix, which I found comical.  Sounds like Cameron has a trilogy on his hands here, I just don’t see this as the type to hold people back from taking the toys out of the package if you get my drift.

“Right now, the thinking is that [Parts] Two and Three are going to be done together, they’ll be released separately, probably a year apart or maybe even two, but they’ll be done in a bunch. I’m mapping out the story line right now, so there’s a proper arc that plays out over two films but buttons nicely at the end of Two, so you don’t get this horrible second-act/end-of-’The Matrix’ feeling.”

Reel: James Cameron Shows Off His 3D Rig
August 25th, 2010 by The Mayor

james cameronJames Cameron took time out of his money counting busy schedule to show off the 3D camera rig that he helped develop to film Avatar.  Cameron shared some of the rig’s tech specs, notably syaing the rig weighs 28 lbs, and Cameron claims that he did all the hand-held camera work on Avatar himself.  Sure, and Grizzly Adams had a beard.  Video after the jump! Avatar Returns To Theaters August 27th 2010

Avatar

James Cameron’s Avatar will finally see a re-release on August 27th 2010 with more than eight minutes of never before seen footage exclusively in Digital 3D and IMAX 3D reports /Film.

I really wouldn’t be posting this news if I didn’t care – so here’s my two cents.  Avatar was really a great movie-going experience.  I don’t plan on making it a home viewing pleasure because I think going in with a lesser babka is just wrong.  What I am saying is, to see Avatar in its true form – you have to see it in theaters.  I can’t say that about many movies, but trust me, if you missed it the first time around, find it now.  Now I know what you’re thinking.  “But Mr. Mayor sir, this is such a money grab it’s not even funny”.  I would tend to agree with you based on what Star Wars has done a few times now, but I think Avatar has done well enough that now – they really do just want to make sure we all saw this spectacle. Titanic 3D in April 2012
July 5th, 2010 by The Mayor

TitanicCameron, you got some ‘splainin’ to do! James Cameron has been talking about rereleasing Titanic in 3D for years now, and  the LA Times says it might finally happen in 2012.  Cameron has been a strong advocate against  post converted 3D movies, so this is strange.  He must be making new technology so he doesn’t come off as a hypocrite.

Cameron has previously said that Fox is targeting Spring 2012 release for the 3D version, to coincide with the 100 year anniversary of the sailing of the ship. The director is currently “converting the blockbuster into 3-D for re-release in April 2012, the 100th anniversary of the ship’s sinking.”

Cameron Talks Avatar Re-Release & Sequel
April 20th, 2010 by The Mayor

Avatar

The highest grossing film of all time and well, just the biggest everything when it comes to movies made it’s way to DVD and Blu-ray this week (it’s still in theaters). It even made its way to our City Strip.  I’m talking about Avatar, and so is James Cameron, who sat down with The LA Times to dish some details on the films re-release and future sequel.  Here are some highlights:

  • Cameron confirms the re-release and extra footage: “We’re working on finishing an additional six minutes of the film — which includes a lot of Weta work — for a theatrical re-release in August.”
  • Avatar 2 will take us into the oceans of Pandora: “We created a broad canvas for the environment of film. That’s not just on Pandora, but throughout the Alpha Centauri AB system. And we expand out across that system and incorporate more into the story – not necessarily in the second film, but more toward a third film…I’m going to be focusing on the ocean on Pandora, which will be equally rich and diverse and crazy and imaginative, but it just won’t be a rain forest. I’m not saying we won’t see what we’ve already seen; we’ll see more of that as well.”

He goes into great detail in this interview and sounds like a straight shooter.  He also comes off as a gigantic nerd, something we appreciate here in the City.  Not you Lucas, you can leave.

James Cameron Hates Many Things, Is Awesome

Staring Contest...GO!

The most powerful man in Hollywood certainly knows how to be a straight shooter.  He doesn’t hold back like most celebrities, scared of who they might offend.  James Cameron just tells it as it is, and I have to say, I really to believe everything he is saying.  What was in that blue kool-aid?

ON POST 3D:

“After TOY STORY, there were 10 really bad CG movies because everybody thought the success of that film was CG and not great characters that were beautifully designed and heartwarming. Now, you’ve got people quickly converting movies from 2D to 3D, which is not what we did. They’re expecting the same result, when in fact they will probably work against the adoption of 3D because they’ll be putting out an inferior product.” (more…)

Avatar DVD And Blu-ray In April
March 18th, 2010 by The Mayor

Looks like James Cameron’s Avatar will be hitting DVD and Blu-ray a bit sooner than expected says the LA Times.  They have decided to rush it out in time for Earth Day on April 22nd.  This comes after hearing that they are re-releasing the film this summer to get back in 3D theaters after being sidelined by Alice In Wonderland.  I guess $2.6 BILLION is not enough for them.  Times are tough.

This initial release will be stripped down and won’t have any extras. If people want to see the extended cut of the movie with additional scenes, they’ll have wait to see it on the big screen (or wait for the multi-disc special edition DVD/Blu-ray that is being planned for the holidays). To make up for the lack of supplementary material, they will be packaging the movie with various goodies like a t-shirt, book, and art cards. As for when we might see a 3-D version of the movie that is compatible with home theater systems, Fox says that won’t be happening this year.

Will you pick up Avatar on DVD or Blu-ray next month, or will you hold out for a more complete version?

avatar just made a billion

You're so money and you don't even know it! Ah, you probably do.

You're so money and you don't even know it! Ah, you probably do.

After only 17 days, AVATAR has grossed over 1 BILLION dollars around the world, is the 4th highest grossing worldwide movie of all-time and sits in 15th place domestically (see charts below).  It’s still at #1 on the box-office and has not lost even 10% of its audience. Weekend 1 ($75M). Weekend 2 ($73M). Weekend 3 ($68M).  You can’t doubt James Cameron anymore.  By the end of the week, the film is expected to surpass Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and Return of the King to become the #2 worldwide release.  Cameron’s Titanic remains seated at #1.  Cameron has become the first director to have two films earn $1 Billion. And by the end of the week, it should be up to $3 billion total between the two movies.  The man will be able to do anything, but I’m still holding out for a Terminator 3 (I said what I said).  Read our AVATAR Review here and notice it on our list of movies you should have seen in 2009.
