Inception

If there’s one thing you should keep in mind while watching a Christopher Nolan film it’s that he will stay away from CGI as much as he can.  It makes for a better looking movie that’s for sure.  The great looking scene in The Dark Knight where the semi truck flips over, no computers there folks.  If you saw Inception, you should know the amazing Corridor fight sequence was also done the old fashioned way.  The scene looked incredible and was very complicated to film and get it just right.  Watch How They Filmed the Inception Corridor Scene below:

the dark knight rises

To hell with it, we’ve decided to go super optimistic with The Dark Knight Rises and have compiled a list of reasons why you should too.  If The Dark Knight was the Empire Strikes Back of sequels, then TDKR is a combination of Return of the King, Last Crusade, Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Toy Story 3 and Goldfinger!  How’s that for hype?  July 20th, 2012 will go down in history as the day the greatest movie ever made was released and here’s why in no particular order: (more…)

It was Monday August 16th 2010, new City Strip day.  Issue #20 titled “iWouldn’t”, a clever play on words taken from the Apple branding handbook.  Genius.

Flash forward to February 16th 2011, Warner Bros. announces it’s taking steps to innovative their home market by releasing two of their hit movies (Christopher Nolan directed), The Dark Knight and Inception, as “App Editions” for the Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad.  The App Edition of Inception will cost you $11.99 while The Dark Knight will cost $9.99.

As a person who doesn’t use either of those pieces of technology and loathes the already unnecessary digital copy that so many DVD’s come with just so they can call it a “3-Disc Special Edition”, this news is meaningless.  That was until our very own Kevin Fraser, the man behind the ink of The City Strip contacted me, out of breath and crying he said  “They stole our joke Graham!”  I quickly hung up on him and went to the Internets.  He was right.

No one really watches movies on their hand devices do they?  I seriously just thought that was a joke, that’s why we made a comic about it.  If we knew people would get hurt…we’re sorry, just so sorry.

The City V. The Drive-In (Part 2)

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

In case you missed part 1, click here. If not, read on!

While the sky opened up and the Sun began to set I went on a search for a movie attendant. Most vehicles present had an external car antenna, mine is internal. Which is nice for most things, not so much for the Drive-In. I sense trouble a brewin’. I walked by cars loaded with colorful characters of all walks of life. On a side note, who brings their giant monster dogs to a movie? The answer, approximately 60% of those in pickup trucks, and 90% of the fellas in cut off t-shirts with handlebar mustaches. (more…)

The City V. The Drive-In (Part 1)

Monday, August 9th, 2010

So originally this article was going to be a post about my night out at the archaic gathering known as the ‘Drive-In’. I wondered, what caused the Drive-In to disappear from North American prevalence? It seemed like a charming idea, at a good price ($8 for a double feature), and a different way to see a movie. The last time I had been to a Drive-In was when I was 9 years old, to the Flintstones movie. While I remember the movie being pretty boring, I have no memory of my experience with the theater itself. So how did the Drive-In hold up to my 2010 standards? Let’s take a look at the night in question and come to a verdict. (more…)

Reaction: Inception (2010)

InceptionYou mustn’t be afraid to dream a little bigger, darling.

Note: CoF reactions are always spoiler free.  We will now be making the habit of condensing all the good things you normally find in a well written review into what we call a ‘Reaction’.  Who are we to criticize someone else art?  So we will just talk about the overall experience, seems fair.

Last week I posted an article titled ‘Why Everyone Should See Inception‘.  I wasn’t just blowing smoke, I am still out there urging people to take the trip to their local cinema and check this one out.  The reason I wrote the article before I even saw the movie I should explain, is because every once in a while and not often, a movie will be released you know you will enjoy (the last one for me being Shutter Island).   My main case in the article was that Inception was original and that moviegoers should be supporting this kind of movie.  Well, I saw Inception opening weekend with a packed house of believers and saying it met my premature hype and expectations would be too obvious.  Would it be less obvious if I said it exceeded them in every way?  Well it did. Why Everyone Should See Inception

inception

Dreams feel real while we’re in them.
It’s only when we wake up that we realize something was actually strange.

It’s said that Christopher Nolan spent ten years writing Inception.  To say the expectations for the film are high is a severe understatement.  His last film The Dark Knight went on to become one of the most successful movies of all time and garner the highest praise for any comic book adaptation ever.  Nolan succeeded in resuscitating Batman for our generation, and now I must declare he is doing the same with our movies.  Creating something this original and on such an epic scale should be praised and sought after.  No matter how high your personal expectations for Inception may be, the film deserves your attention for many reasons, everyone should see Inception. You can check the comic out here if you can’t contain yourself.  Inception is out Friday!
