Well we are a little over a month away from the season premiere of True Blood. The show has had vampires, werewolves, and now witches! I am not really sure how I feel about this, but I trust HBO that the show won’t start ‘sucking’. Sorry.

True Blood premieres Sunday, June 26.

TV Teaser: HBO Drama ‘Luck’

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011

Here is a first look at HBO’s upcoming horse racing drama series Luck from Michael Mann (Heat) and David Milch (Deadwood). Set to premiere in the fall, it stars Dustin Hoffman and co-stars Dennis Farina, John Ortiz and Nick Nolte.  Described as a provocative look at horse racing – the owners, gamblers, jockeys and industry players — Luck stars Hoffman (in his first TV series role) as Ace Bernstein, a powerful organized crime figure.  Check out the teaser: (more…)

One of the best TV shows of all time is returning, and it’s looking great as usual.  Curb Your Enthusiasm comes to New York and we have a short behind the scenes look to get you excited.  In the eighth season of the hit HBO series we see guest stars Ricky Gervais, Michael J. Fox and Rosie O’Donnell making appearances as well as the always welcome J.B. Smoove as Leon.  Note: There was another teaser floating around the net this week but HBO has since taken it away, so this one which I hadn’t seen before might be a rerun for some.

Check it out Sunday, July 10, at 10 pm.

talking funnyIf there is one thing Ricky Gervais is good at (there’s a lot) it would have to be sitting around just “avin’ a laugh“.  He’s been doing it for years on his Guinness Record breaking podcast with Steve and Karl, and now he’s taking it to a whole other level.

Here’s a first look at Ricky Gervais’ TV special, Talking Funny – a discussion about comedy with Ricky Gervais, Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock and Louis CK.  These four great comedians of our time are sitting around and just shooting the shit.  This has now become the TV event of the year.  Watch it on HBO April 22nd, then again the next day like me.

The special is unique in that it doesn’t have a host or moderator. It’s just four comedy legends matching wits, talking shop and making each other laugh in a purely conversational manner. [HP] (more…)

chris lilley

We Can Be Heroes and Summer Heights High (clip below), two TV series that if you haven’t heard of or seen, do yourself a favor and search it out.  Summer Heights High is one of the funniest shows I’ve ever seen and is a great introduction to comedian Chris Lilley.  He’s back with Angry Boys which will premiere on HBO in the coming months.

The Australian comedian once again writes and stars as all the lead parts in a comedy series, this time focusing on the different roles men play in society. Lilley himself plays a pair of co-dependent brothers, a former surfing great, an untalented rapper, a prison guard grandma and an overprotective Asian mother.  Sold.  I’ve heard only great things about this new series, Lilley goes further than ever with his characters and situations being more offensive.  Stay tuned for a premier date.

Not too long ago in my post for HBO’s 2011 line up, I mentioned how I was looking forward to HBO Films’ Cinema Verite, a project I have had my eye on since first hearing about it, we saw the first trailer and needless to say, I’m more excited.  Cinema Verite stars Diane Lane and Tim Robbins , and James Gandolfini. It was directed by husband and wife team Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini (American Splendor), and written by David Seltzer (1976′s The Omen).

The film dramatizes the making of PBS’ 1973 documentary series An American Family, “the first reality show” HBO says.  It chronicled the real life, daily struggles of the Louds, a seemingly perfect California family who were not only catapulted to fame by the film, but helped the creation of a new television genre – the reality TV series.

Cinema Verite premieres on HBO April 23.  Watch the trailer: (more…)

Earlier we showed you the trailer for Cinema Verite from HBO films, due out in April. Now we have a 42-second trailer for Thurgood, starring Laurence Fishburne. Thurgood will air February 24th on HBO in honor of Black History Month. Check out the trailer and  synopsis below.

Synopsis:

Told in the first person by Fishburne in the role of Marshall, THURGOOD is a compelling present-tense narration revisiting the turning points in his life and career as he remembers them. From childhood stories of his family and home life in Baltimore, to his college days at Howard University School of Law in Washington, D.C., Marshall recollects his triumphs over adversity to pursue a successful career in the judicial system fighting for human rights. Establishing benchmarks in Civil Rights advancement, Marshall tried the historic case of Brown vs. Board of Education before the Supreme Court, successfully challenging the unconstitutional segregation of black and white students in public schools. His achievements eventually led him to become the first African-American to serve as a Supreme Court Justice.

sunset limited

In our HBO 2011 Line Up we covered the HBO Films production of Cormac McCarthy’s (No Country for Old Men, The Road) play The Sunset Limited. The film stars Samuel L. Jackson and Tommy Lee Jones (who also directs the film), and takes place entirely in one room.  As the film begins, Jackson’s character has just saved Jones’ character from jumping in front of a train, and he insists that Jones’ character come back to his apartment with him to talk. The two proceed to discuss and debate a variety of topics, with opposing views on religion being the driving force.

The Sunset Limited will premiere on HBO on February 12th. Jump for the trailer: (more…)
