Box Office Report: Audiences Go Apeshit

Sunday, August 7th, 2011

box office

With no Box Office drop on Saturday, it’s clear the word of mouth on Rise of the Planet of the Apes is strong and should carry it through the week to overcome its $95M budget.  It’s crazy to think this franchise still has legs after all these years, people love them some Apes.  And it’s worth nothing that every monkey, baboon, and ape in the movie is done with capture technology, those damn dirty effects.

1. Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes – $54M
2. The Smurfs – $21M  – $76.2M
3. Cowboys & Aliens -$15.7M – $67.3M
4. The Change-Up – $13.5M
5. Captain America – $13M – $143.1M

R-Rated comedies were just hitting their stride I think, and then came along The Change-Up.  Something just didn’t click with me for this one and clearly I wasn’t alone, the film had bad trailer and even worse reviews.  Poor Ryan Reynolds can’t catch a break this summer.

How Indy lost his Fedora.

I didn’t know what Cowboys & Aliens was until this news broke, I guess I should drop those Sweet Valley High books and pick up a graphic novel sometime.  So it goes, an extraterrestrial species lands in Arizona  in the mid-1800s. The aliens plan to quash the Wild West and enslave humanity, but the cowboys and native Apache have other plans.  Pfft, they are just pulling headlines from the paper now.  Jon Favreau (Director of Iron Man, and Pete Becker on Friends) is directing.

Robert Downey Jr. was initially in talks to star as Zeke Jackson, but the role has gone to Daniel Craig due to scheduling issues for Downey.  Today Favreau confirmed that Harrison Ford has been cast in the film.

Here is what he tweeted: @Jon_Favreau: Please stop asking if Harrison Ford is in Cowboys & Aliens. Okay? He is. Please don’t tell anybody.

More on the novel here.  What do you think about Ford involvement with the project?  And can we trust this tweet is from Jon?  What if one of his kids decided to mess with his laptop?
