conan

Here is the opening video of last night’s premiere of Conan on TBS. The clip features dramatizations of Conan quitting NBC, a Godfather spoof, TBS’ offer and guests Jon Hamm as Don Draper from Mad Men and Larry King as Conan’s guardian angel.

It’s good to have COCO back, I’ve been watching him since his 1997 season of Late Night with Conan O’Brien – and he’s always entertained me more than any other late night program. This week especially, the press and suits will be all over Conan’s numbers from his premier and nights that follow. They may be quick on the trigger to compare his numbers to network shows like Letterman and Leno, but he’s cable now and has a lot of leg room when it comes to all that so don’t worry folks.  From the looks and sounds of it, he is much more happy to be there, and I’m happy to have a reason to stay up late again.

Conan O’Brien Announces Name Of New TBS Show

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

Conan has confirmed the name and premiere date of his new TBS show, and the name?  Watch the video below!   It will premiere on TBS this November 8, 2010.

Conan O'BrienYou might recall that whole Tonight Show battle between NBC and Conan O’Brien from a few months ago, if not – CoCo won.  An agreement was made stating that Conan could not publicly disparage NBC nor appear on television for about six months, O’Brien is finally ready to make the return to late night. TBS has just announced that Conan’s new show will premiere on the station on November 8th, 2010 at 11 PM. It will be followed by Lopez Tonight.

It should be interesting to see what people make of the new show and I am sure they will go on to compare the numbers between the late night shows across TV land.  Will it be fair to compare?  Cable numbers are much different from Network numbers is what I am getting at.  Yeah, uninteresting – my thoughts too.  Jump for a very short TBS promo. It has some funny moments, and it’s good to see Conan is alive and well.  The loser at Google are pretty embarrassing with their questions.  “Do the dance”, “Let me touch your hair”.  What?  Is Conan a clown?  Is he here to amuse you? Oh he is?  Carry on. (more…)

Reel: Conan O’Brien On 60 Minutes

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

Conan O'BrienIf you’ve followed the late night TV battle this year, you probably won’t learn much that’s new from the Conan O’Brien interview on 60 Minutes. He is too nice of a guy to say how he really feels and at this point still can’t speak too poorly of NBC (it is in a contract).  So I wonder what they were scared of?  Maybe looking like tits. Conan O’Brien Returns To TV On TBS

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Conan O'BrienWell this is surprising.  We might be the last site to report the news that Conan O’Brien is coming back to TV this November (I was in a Dentist chair).  Joe Adalian at TheWrap.com (and Conan himself on Twitter) confirm that he’s going to do a late night show on TBS (the same network that brings us 9 episodes of Friends a day).  Everyone was thinking FOX and now it’s TBS, which does seem like a big change.  There comes many perks with this move, it being not such a big network would give him more room to stretch those comedic skills and get away with more; less pressure for sure not being on a bigger name network.

“In three months I’ve gone from network television to Twitter to performing live in theaters and now I’m headed to basic cable…my plan is working perfectly.”

O’Brien’s show will be followed on TBS’ schedule by George Lopez’s Lopez Tonight, which will move to midnight.  And before people start talking about how Conan got his way and Lopez got moved…Sources tell TMZ the idea of bringing Conan to TBS was hatched by Turner’s entertainment chief Steve Koonin.  We’re told Koonin went to George Lopez and said he would only approach Conan if George gave his blessing.  We’re told George immediately figured out that having Conan as an 11:00 PM lead-in would be nothing short of amazing for a midnight show. More CoCo and video, click on…

We try to keep it reel around here – but sometimes we get into TV and scandal if it calls for it.  Many of you know the debacle by now concerning The Tonight Show.  Here are the quick facts:

  • 5 years ago NBC told Leno that they wanted Conan for The Tonight Show, Leno said OK.
  • Leno left The Tonight Show, and felt the need to still be on TV.  They gave him his own show that would air before Conan’s Tonight Show.
  • NBC didn’t realize much about how ratings work and who watches what at 10pm, so shit hit the fan when no one was watching Leno or Conan. (they went bat shit after Seinfeld went off the air)
  • NBC now wants Leno back on The Tonight Show, this after moving Conan and his family to LA and only giving him 7 months to fulfill his dream.
  • Conan said he would not move.  Leno said he would not let that happen to Conan.  Leno signed a new contract to take over The Tonight Show after the 2010 Winter Olympics.  Conan is out.
  • Contracts in place may be shredded so Conan can go to another network (FOX) or NBC (Jeff Zucker) may keep the ink and keep Conan off TV for 3.5 years.  There is talk that the contract says NBC had the right to move Conan to anytime – so if they breach this (by letting him go) they may have to pay up.
  • UPDATE: The late-night nightmare is almost over. Conan O’Brien is leaving NBC and receiving a payout—and he’ll be free to appear on another network before his contract expires.  [source]

It seems most people are behind Conan.  I like Leno, but I don’t know how he and NBC are going to spin this to make Leno look like he had his hands tied.  In the video above we see funny man Jimmy Kimmel take constant jabs at Leno of course.  Letterman and other TV personalities also seem to be on team CoCo.  It will be sad to see Conan go – but maybe this means we will get another favorite Simpsons episode out of it.

simp20

The Simpson’s celebrated their 20th Anniversary with an all new opening sequence and an HD episode.  It’s a shame that people even compare The Simpsons to Family Guy or even the great South Park.  To me the Simpsons stands alone as the animated show of all animated shows.  Lower ratings over the last few years to me doesn’t mean that the show has declined in quality, but declined in viewership to ‘quick joke’ shows such as Family Guy.  I guess now isn’t the time to get in the debate of which show is better and why, but the fact remains that the Simpsons is still great and relevant today, and after 20 years, that is something to celebrate.

For the Conan O’Brien fans out there, so all of you I hope, you should have tuned in on Friday the 20th for his last Late Night show before he takes over for Leno on June 1st.  I have been watching since way back in 95.  Andy Richter was there and was even still funny.  Conan has come a long way and fitting that I tie this in with the Simpsons news because not many people know that Conzie was a write on The Simpsons and even wrote the much beloved monorail episode.  Let’s take a look: Marge vs. the Monorail.  Check out Inside the Actors Studio as well.
