It’s the final weeks of summer, can you tell?  Apes continue to rise at the box office with great word of mouth and that Glee 3D movie no one seemed to want to promote turned into no one wanting to watch as well.  It didn’t even break the top 10.

1. Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes – $27.5M – $104.8M Total
2. The Help – $25.5M – $35.4 Total
3. Final Destination 5     $18,400,000     $18.4
4. The Smurfs – $21M – $76.2M
3. Cowboys & Aliens -$15.7M – $67.3M
4. The Change-Up – $13.5M
5. 30 Minutes or Less – $13M

Rise of the Planet of the Apes fell less than 50% this week going past the $100M point besting where X-Men in and soon Captain America were after 10 days.  So who knew that Final Destination could still make money?  Not me.  This tired franchise might still have legs for some people though bringing in some impressive coin.  The Help opened on Wednesday apparently and made $5M going into the weekend for an overachieving victory for Disney/Dreamworks.

Next weekend – Conan the Barbarian and Fright Night.

box office

Depending on where you are, this past weekend you might be celebrating Canada Day or the Fourth of July, it’s also traditionally a big weekend for movies too. Michael Bay’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon broke records of course, so let’s take a look.

2.  Cars 2 – $25.1M – $116M
3.  Bad Teacher – $14.1M – $59.5M

Transformers: Dark of the Moon is projected to take in more than $370M by Monday. The film broke the record for the three day Fourth of July weekend and is expected to hold the four day record as well come Monday.  This will take out Spider-Man 2 which has held the record for the biggest Fourth of July weekend (Friday-Sunday) with $88.2M.

Also this weekend, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides passed $1B in worldwide grosses.  A huge 76% of its earnings have come from overseas, where people still like this franchise I guess.

Green Lantern with all its bad reviews and word of mouth had a three day opening of just $52.6M.  Should be interesting to see if Warner Brothers tries to spin that one.  Jonah Hex memories?  Me thinks so.  On the other hand, Batman Begins debuted with $48.7M, that was with great critical response yet no 3D ticket prices.

Mr. Popper’s Penguins earned $18.2M, on par with Jim Carrey’s latest efforts [see].  Super 8, last weekend’s number one film dropped to second place holding onto it’s audience.

Super 8 took the top spot this weekend with an estimated $37M to push the X-Men to second place with $25M just a day or so away from crossing the $100M mark.  To me Super 8 should have done better, especially with the crazy push the studio gave it over the last week.  It was also one of the best of year according to my review.

1. Super 8 – $37M
2. X-Men: First Class – $25M ($98.8M)
3. Hangover Part II – $18.5M ($216.5M)
4. Kung Fu Panda 2 – $16.6M ($126.9M)
5. Pirates 4 – $10.8M ($208M)
6. Bridesmaids – $10M ($123.9M)
7. Judy Moody – $6.2M ($6.2M)
8. Midnight in Paris – $6M ($14.2M)
9. Thor – $2.3 ($173.6M)
10. Fast Five – $1.7M ($205)

X-Men is still moving slower than the previous mutant films, but as I said last week, this film was a much harder sell and should merit a sequel when all is said and done.  The Hangover Part II broke the $200 million mark on Friday and soon after became the top-grossing film of 2011.  Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris expanded into 944 locations and still holds in the top 10.

Next weekend, Green Lantern…anyone heard of it?

A lot of people are going to compare X-Men First Class’s performance to earlier films in the franchise (which you can do below as well) but I don’t think that would be a fair comparison.

X-Men: First Class was never a guaranteed hit, a lesser known cast, no Wolverine and let’s face it, audiences are stupid and having a film set in the 60′s today just turns them off.  The previous two X-Men films (that were hated for the most part by critics and moviegoers) were X-Men Origins: Wolverine and X-Men: The Last Stand are also a reason for people to be turned off.  This is the best reviewed X-Men since X2, that’s something isn’t it?

xmen

1. X-Men: First Class – $56M
2. Hangover Part II – $32.4M ($186.8M)
3. Kung Fu Panda 2 – $24.3M ($100.4M)
4. Pirates 4 – $18M ($190.2M)
5. Bridesmaids – $12.1M ($107.2M)
6. Thor – $4.2M ($169M)
7. Fast Five – $3.2M ($202M)
8. Midnight in Paris – $2.9M ($6.9M)
9. Jumping the Broom – $865K ($35.9M)
10. Something Borrowed – $835K    ($36.6M)

For those Fast Five fans, FF passed the $200M mark in the US,  the first film of 2011 to do so.  Next weekend we see director JJ Abrams  Super 8, I will have a review up ASAP.

Here are the estimates for the top ten films this past Memorial Day Weekend.  If we need to, all official numbers will be updated tomorrow.

Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides has earned the highest first-weekend total of 2011, with an estimated $90.1M and over $346 million worldwide.

1. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides – $90.1M
2. Bridesmaids – $21.1M 9 – ($59.5M)
3. Thor – $15.5M – ($145.4M)
4. Fast Five – $10.6M  – ($186.2M)
5. Rio – $4.65M – ($131.6M)

Bridesmaids did very well again, holding on to 80% of its first weekend grosses which far exceeded expectations of just about everyone.  Next weekend we will see the release of two sequels, Kung-Fu Panda and The Hangover Part II.  It’s going to be a big one for sure.

box office

Not a lot going on this past weekend, the numbers are in and it’s Thor once again taking #1 with $34M for a two week total of $115M, not too shabby.  Bridesmaids was expected to do well, maybe not this good taking in $22.4M, it was also expected to be bunch of girls burping and farting like the boys do, it’s not, check this one out.

1. Thor – $34.5M – ($119.3M)
2. Bridesmaids – $22.4M
3. Fast Five – $19.5M – ($168M)
4. Priest – $14.5M
5. Rio – $8M – ($124M)

[MORE: Box Office Mojo, The-Numbers]

The other new wide release, Priest, came in fourth place with a soft $14.5M up against a $60M budget – expect this one to tap out next weekend.  Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides hits next week and is sure to make a bundle, as much as previous entries?  Who knows?  It Should be interesting.

That’s the best George Thorogood name game I could come up with, sorry.  Some say the summer movies started last week with Fast Five, I personally think they started when The CoF posted its annual Summer Movie Guide.  Let’s take a look at what went on this weekend at the box office:

1. Thor – $66M
2. Fast Five – $32.5M – ($139.9M)
3. Jumping the Broom – $13.7M
4. Something Borrowed – $13.2M
5. Rio – $14.4 ($103.6)

[MORE: Box Office Mojo, The-Numbers]

Thor was expected to make about that much, he’s not on a lot of lunchboxes is another way to put it.  He did well though, kicked off what should be a recording breaking summer in terms of money intake.  Also, Fast Five has earned enough in 10 days to become 2011′s highest-grossing release, impressive regardless of your take on the franchise.

To counter Thor this weekend, the ladies were given Something Borrowed (am I the only one who dislikes John Krasinski a lot?) and Jumping the Broom.  JTB beat Something Borrowed, which all of the Kate Hudson haters will enjoy – and did this on less screens (JTB 2034 to Borrowed 2904).  Watch for a Thor repeat next week when Priest 3D arrives and people still ask what is this?

box office

The Summer has started, and it’s Fast Five leading the way while breaking many records in the process.  Next week brings another major movie, the long-awaited release of Thor.  For those keeping score, Thor is already Hollywood’s best overseas launch of 2011 with $93M.

[MORE: Box Office Mojo, The-Numbers]

1. Fast Five – $83.6M
2. Rio – $14.4 ($103.6)
3. Madea’s Big Happy Family – $10M ($41M)
4. Water for Elephants – $9.1M ($32.2M)
5. Prom – $5M

Fast Five has the highest opening weekend of 2011 and  the highest opening of the entire franchise [see].  Other records include Fast Five being the biggest debut Universal has had this year or any year for that matter.  Then we have newcomers Prom and Hoodwinked Too; Prom failed to recapture that High School Musical magic and tanked while Hoodwinked didn’t even clear the top 5, earning $4.1M.  Did I mention Hoodwinked was in 3D (75% of its theaters).  Ouch.

Check out our recent poll on Facebook and let us know what Summer movie you are most looking forward too.
