dark knight rises
[Catch up on all of our DKR coverage]

Back in February we supplied the world with the great news that Joseph Gordon-Levitt was going to be in Christopher Nolan‘s The Dark Knight Rises.  The pair worked previously on Inception and we all know how great that worked out, well get ready for more.

It has been revealed that he will be taking on the role of Alberto Falcone a.k.a. The Holiday Killer, the son of Mafia head Carmine Falcone played by Tom Wilkinson in Batman Begins bringing the greatest comic book movies of all time full circle.  Variety goes on to mention the role and how it “fits with the director’s stated intentions for continuity and “realistic” villains.”

The cast is coming together really well, I am going to stay clear of as many set pictures and spoilers as I can, I almost feel like I know too much already.  The Dark Knight Rises July 20th 2012.

[Update March 21] – EW is putting a stop to the recent news that Joseph Gordan-Levitt will play Alberto Falcone in The Dark Knight Rises.  He has indeed been cast in the film, but EW says he won’t be playing this character.  Stay tuned as we find clarification.

Michael Gough, the actor who played Alfred the butler in four Batman movies has died at the age of 94.  Gough’s resume is a long one and includes  Top Secret! and Out of Africa.  Like many people of my generation, I will always remember Gough as Alfred.  He is survived by his wife Henrietta Gough.

Rise and shine...

In an interview published this morning by Geoff Boucher of Hero Complex, director Christopher Nolan revealed that the title of the third Batman film will be The Dark Knight Rises. He also gave some details about the plot and direction of the upcoming sequel.  More is coming in today, so here is what we know:

  • “It won’t be The Riddler” (he also sad earlier it wouldn’t be Mr. Freeze)
  • “We’ll use many of the same characters as we have all along, and we’ll be introducing some new ones”
  • Nolan also commented about convincing Warner Brothers to go with IMAX instead of 3D for the film.
  • TDKR is looking for a female lead right now, start guessing [like we did].

I can see why the Riddler was cast off, he’s a little too familiar perhaps to the work the Joker did in TDK.  No 3D is always a great thing, sounds like Nolan is staying on track to what he envisioned in the beginning and not letting people change it for him.  The Dark Knight Rises is great because it tells us it’s not going to be The Dark Knight Returns (Frank Millers’ classic story) and ‘Returns’ was already used – I know I’m stretching it there.  Rises also feels like redemption could be forthcoming.  Oh the possibilities!  As for the villain, if your trying to figure it out here is a tip: think Nolan universe.  Check back later today for more.  The Dark Knight Rises  on July 20, 2012.

Batman 3: Who’s the Next Villain?

Batman 3

Now that Inception is behind him, Christopher Nolan can now focus on what might be his most difficult film to date; his final act in the Batman Trilogy. The fan expectations I fear will never be met and commercially, it will be surprising if lightning can be captured once again. No story details have been released whatsoever, so obviously the rumor mill is going mad with ideas and suggestions.

Where can he take the next film as a director? How will it all end? We may not know the answers, but we can certainly speculate with everyone. Today we will do just that with a co-op venture from The Mayor and The District Attorney. We have each selected our choices for villains and the actors we feel would most suit the role. Please leave your own feedback in the comments and we can all debate and speculate…it’s all we have. See our picks.

Trailers

Up first for trailers this week, Welcome to the Rileys starring Kristen Stewart and James Gandolfini directed by Jake Scott, son of Ridley. A couple driven apart by the death of their daughter are brought back together when they meet a troubled young woman. Galdolfini looks to be in top form yet again in this nice little dramatic role. Kristen Stewart is shown only for a few seconds here and there, but we haven’t forgotten she really can’t act. The film opens November 5th. (more…)

City of ScarsAaron Schoenke released a Batman fan film City of Scars, the film was shot in less than a month, and for only $27,000, but it looks a lot better than that.  I hear the words ‘fan film’ and I immediately think about kids in a backyard shooting phasers at each other, not that there’s anything wrong with that.

City of Scars is a considerable accomplishment, it’s not top notch when it comes to originality and might not be as cool as seeing Batman: Dead End for the first time.  Fan films are not perfect, but really, look at what’s playing these days – can we judge?  Look for appearances by the Joker, Harley, Mr. Zsasz, Scarface, and the Ventriloquist, and the use of fatal hilarity – an old Joker trick – not the “Funniest Joke In The World“.

Batman Year One Is Coming To DVD

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

Batman Year OneWarner Bros. Home Video are developing an animated adaptation of the classic Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli comic story Batman: Year One, according to Comics Continuum.

Batman: Year One, published in 1987 was the first story that took Batman out of  Adam West territory and into a very realistic, very gritty real-world. The story continues to be hugely influential and was used as much of the basis for David Goyer’s original Batman Begins script.  A young Bruce Wayne has spent his adolescence and early adulthood, traveling the world so he could hone his body and mind into the perfect fighting and investigative machine. But now as he returns to Gotham City, he must find a way to focus his passion and bring justice to his city. Retracing Batman’s first attempts to fight injustice as a costumed vigilante, we watch as he chooses a guise of a giant bat, creates an early bond with a young Lieutenant James Gordon, inadvertently plays a role in the birth of Catwoman, and helps to bring down a corrupt political system that infests Gotham.

You can read a preview of Year One here.  On July 27th, Warner Bros. will release Batman: Under the Red Hood.

The JokerThere is a Chris Nolan themed Empire Magazine on sale now and I won’t divulge all the scoops inside, as the magazine is pretty great and you should pick it up.  When asked on whether Nolan would re-cast The Joker for Batman 3, he emphatically and without hesitation answers “No”.  I personally never felt it was going to happen and if it did, it would be with arguments on the Internet the likes we haven’t seen since…well since maybe Heath Ledger was cast as the Joker.  Maybe his distinctive laugh might be heard in the halls of Arkham in the 3rd instalment?  Just thought of that myself, for real.

From the latest issue of Empire magazine:

There is the ever-lurking question about villains: who will The Dark Knight tussle with this time… Could it possibly be a returning (and recast) Joker, pulling strings from Arkham, Lecter-style, Empire wonders?

“No”, says Nolan emphatically and unhesitatingly. He resists elaborating simply because, quite understandably, he says, “I just don’t feel comfortable talking about it”.

Batman 3 Official Release Date!

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Mark it down in the calendar kids.  I would mark it with erasable ink, but maybe I’m being pessimistic.  Last week, IMAX announced that they had signed a 20-film deal with Warner and Batman 3 was listed as one of the films which might be released sometime between 2011 and 2013.   Nolan has only said that he was working on a story/script with David Goyer and brother Jonathan Nolan.  Premature?  Or are they just keeping quiet.

Well, Warner Bros has just now announced an official release date for Christopher Nolan’s Batman 3.  July 20th 2012, the same weekend as The Dark Knight.  You can breath now.
