winsletNews concerning The Oscars tends to be boring (wake me up when Ricky Gervais wins) and this unfortunately is no different. So I have one of my favorites Kate Winslet to help.

I can still remember when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominated five films every year for the Best Picture Oscar.  It was nice; they didn’t have to reach too far to please everyone. Two years ago the Academy decided to revisit the days when ten films were nominated.

So it’s changing again, now the Academy will make “between five and ten” nominations.  Do you think this is because they have been looking at the movies this year and figure they might be struggling come crunch time?  A 3D nomination would make me sick.  I like the fact they are not just arbitrarily choosing a number like 10 and filling in gaps.  They will choose 5 and see if any other fills merit a nomination.
In addition to this, a few changes have been made to the way that Oscar contenders are nominated for visual effects awards, and for Best Animated Film too, see the full press release: (more…)

the oscars get even longer, sigh

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today that the number of Best Picture nominees has gone up from six to 10 for the 82nd Academy Awards, which will be presented on March 7, 2010.

“After more than six decades, the Academy is returning to some of its earlier roots, when a wider field competed for the top award of the year,” President Sid Ganis announced. “Having 10 Best Picture nominees is going to allow Academy voters to recognize and include some of the fantastic movies that often show up in the other Oscar categories, but have been squeezed out of the race for the top prize.”

Does anyone else out there who makes a top 10 list at the years end also find it near impossible?  Why can’t they also take this time to trash the Best Animated award too?  Nonsense this seems to me.
