Star Wars Coming to Blu-Ray, Lucas Still Doesn’t Get It
At something called Star Wars Celebration V, George Lucas made the big announcement that the entire Star Wars saga would be released in a Blu-Ray box set in Fall 2011. According to IGN, the set will feature “all six live-action Star Wars feature films, with the highest picture and audio quality,” along with extensive extras like “documentaries, vintage behind-the-scenes moments, interviews, retrospectives and never-before-seen footage from the Lucasfilm archives.”
Lucas went on to confirm that you’re getting the 2004 clean-ups of the 1997 Special Editions with a hint that a future release may include the restored original releases. Lucas said that releasing the original trilogy was “kind of an oxymoron because the quality of the original is not very good.” This just in: George Lucas doesn’t go on the Internet. Ever. Of course the nerds want the poor quality George, don’t you see? It’s nostalgia, not your generic and boring storytelling with polish on top. We want to watch the scratchy film and remember when you didn’t have such a boner for action figures [read about said boner here]. I’m over it.
