Spotlight: The Wrestler

December 1st, 2008 by Graham

“…Witness the resurrection of Mickey Rourke”

This December one of my most anticipated films arrives in theaters.  Darren Aronofsky (The Fountain) directs The Wrestler starring Mickey Rourke, Marisa Tomei and Evan Rachel Wood.  The film premiered at the 2008 Venice Film Festival and was a winner of the Golden Lion Award for Best Film. Fox Searchlight acquired rights to distribute the film and will be released limited on December 17, 2008.

In short it’s a drama centered on retired professional wrestler Randy “The Ram” Robinson (Rourke) as he makes his way through the independent circuit, trying to get back in the game for one final showdown with his former rival.

Don’t let anyone tell you this is a wrestling movie when clearly it is so much more.  The trailer alone should be enough evidence to support that.  From what I hear this is looking to be a natch contender come Oscar time.  Aronofsky needed this after his little bump with the misunderstood Fountain.  Rourke is said to be in top form and many are speculating a Oscar nod for him as well.

On a side note, if you ever get a chance try and catch Beyond The Mat and you will see some very strong similarities in The Ram story and the Jake the Snake story from that.  Check the official Site for more updates.
