shutter island pushed to february, riot time

August 21st, 2009 by Graham

File this under WTF.  Paramount has moved Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island out of 2009 awards contention to a February 19th, 2010 release date [movieline]. With a February release date, the movie’s award chances are slimmer being disqualified for most of the 2009 Awards.

So why did Paramount fu*k up make the move?  The recession.  Paramount told the filmmakers it doesn’t have the financing in 2009 to spend the $50M to $60M necessary to market a big awards pic like this.  BUT can make drek like this.

So the studio has decided to put Shutter Island in The Silence of the Lambs slot.  Silence of the Lambs went on to win five Oscars in 1992, despite the mid-February slot.  We get 10 Best Picture noms next year, so me thinks this can easily make it in.  Move over Old Dogs, we’re coming!
