THE MOVIE:
Steven Spielberg‘s World War II epic Saving Private Ryan chronicles the journey of a GI squad on a dangerous mission behind enemy lines. Led by Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks), the unit is under orders to track down a soldier, Private Ryan (Matt Damon), so he might return home to his mother in America, where she is grieving the unimaginable loss of her three other sons to the war.
THE SCENE:
The first unforgettable 20 minutes of Saving Private Ryan realistically and horrifically depicts the Normandy invasion as Miller and his unit land at Omaha Beach. It’s one of the strongest scenes in any film, but not today’s stealer. I recommend you watch the film in its entirety if you haven’t. The unit eventually finds Ryan and in this moment Captain Miller and the private share a scene where Ryan confesses he can’t even remember what his brothers look like. Matt Damon ad-libbed the story he tells, it has been noted that Steven Spielberg liked it so much he decided to leave it in the film.
