Synopsis: Michael Myers is still at large and no less dangerous than ever. After a failed reunion to reach his baby sister at their old home, Laurie Strode is immediately taken to a hospital to be treated by the wounds that had been afflicted by her brother a few hours ago. However, Michael isn’t too far off and will continue his murdering ‘Halloween’ rampage until he gets his sister all to himself.
To say that HALLOWEEN II was effective would be an understatement. I saw the movie almost a week ago and still can’t seem to find the words. I enjoyed Rob Zombies Halloween “remake”, Halloween II is what I would call a “re-imagination”; it has no resemblance to the original sequel besides the brilliant opening scene in the hospital. After that, Zombie does what he does best; his own work. Zombie is a great filmmaker; If you get the chance, I implore you to see THE DEVILS REJECTS; one of the best movies of the last decade.
I found Zombie’s take on the original impassioned. While not a perfect film, “Halloween” showcased the creative potential of the remake. Halloween II finds Zombie tightening already-established character arcs with a new gritty style, and so much more violence. Whereas “Halloween” focused on the evolution of Myers from a murderous youth to the masked madman we all know and love, this time out the focus is “family”. The film looks in many ways, how these characters dreams would. Complex – quick, out of focus, black and white; and we get to see some of these dreams within the movie. All these dreams and character interactions all lead up to an unpredictable climax. Halloween II has depth; and for those who need to look away anytime they feel a movie kill coming on – prepare to watch a floor for over an hour.
The film misses the mark a few times with odd pacing issues, but makes up for it with on the mark dialogue and imagery. This movie is dark and violent, just like Michael Myers. The images are those from your worst nightmares…if you’re a serial killer. It’s all there. I will say the movie might be a little too imaginative for some viewers, so go in with an open mind. This isn’t your regular churn of horror crap (Unborn, Mirrors) that comes and goes. Although by the looks and sounds of it, H2 will be soon no longer be showing in theaters. The upside to that of course is we may get another great DVD from Zombie; his Devils Rejects and Halloween DVD are some of my favorites. The final scene of H2 will be the one I remember; a fairly big touch of Hitchcock brings us full circle to fully understand that Laurie Strode is truly a Myers.
