UPDATE: Variety reports that the theatrical release has been pushed back from April 30 to July 30. Consolidated Pictures Group is distributing the film. Phillip Morris will open in a limited run, and begin expanding on Aug. 6.
When the trailer hit for Jim Carrey’s bizarre comedy I Love You, Phillip Morris I was curious to see how it would fair, I guess now we know. Consolidated Pictures Group, the small distributor that picked up I Love You, Phillip Morris after Sundance 2009, has decided delay the film indefinitely. It was first set for a March 26 release which was then pushed to April 30. And now the LA Times has been in contact with a spokesperson for the film, who says “there is no release date scheduled at this time.”
Just when you think Carrey is going to do something different for change, they muck it up for us. I wonder if this has to do with the reaction by distributors against the explicit gay sex scene in the film. I guess that is still a taboo for certain people, even after a great film like Brokeback Mountain went on to win 3 Oscars. Here is hoping for a VOD/DVD type of release.
