Leaving the theater this afternoon it was clear that the kids who just watched The Avengers really loved it. They were already re-enacting the Hulk moments, (there are many of them) leaving me feeling old, that’s because I was actually bored for most of the movie.
The first act of Joss Whedon’s near erotic love letter to fans of the past Marvel movies is a wash, if you’re coming to this movie, it should be expected you know these characters. We didn’t need the paint by numbers who’s who in Marvel land again; you squeezed that into the four previous cash grabs.
I swear at one point I thought Robert Downey Jr. was going to look right at the camera and say “time to assemble…right guys!?” Too many winks, nods, and reminders of things we know and have seen. Also, Hawkeye and Black Widow should never have been included in this film; they couldn’t shine at all next to people with actual powers.
Alright, I got that out of my system. The payoff is in the third act, and yes the Hulk steals the movie. It is shot really well, you can actually see what’s happening (take note Transformers) which might be a first when it comes to Manhattan getting its ass kicked. The battles are nicely scaled and fun to watch, I also enjoyed the chemistry between Tony Stark and Bruce Banner, if we can get an Iron Man & Hulk movie going we should. Go into this movie expecting a build up that you already seen and you will do fine.
FYI: Before Mark Ruffalo was cast as The Hulk, Joaquin Phoenix was rumored for the part.
