I tried to make a hoverboard like the one Marty McFly used in the Back to the Future II/III. And in turn found out that braces are not that bad. French artist Nils Guadagnin has built a working replica of McFly’s floating board for an exhibition entitled, appropriately enough, “Back to the Future”.
The hoverboard features an electromagnetic system that allows it to levitate as well as a laser system that stabilizes the object. Guadagnin explains, “In the making of this work, I was thinking about different ways of presenting sculpture. In fact it’s a reflexion on the multiple possibilities of how to give a sculpture full spatial autonomy.”
Unfortunately the artist’s board can’t hold enough weight for people to actually ride it. I bet it doesn’t float on water either.
