WIN some FAIL some

Cutting right to the chase here to avoid taking up the spotlight, a few weeks back the District Attorney made a post [here] about the new Prince of Persia movie. This got me wondering; in the history of movies what were some of the worse adaptations around? Now, I know this sounds like an oxymoron because to be honest there are really (in the eyes of fan boys) no amazing adaptations out there. So let’s take a look at some WINS and FAILS.  Leave your own below and I will be sure to comment!

Batman 3: Who’s the Next Villain?

Batman 3

Now that Inception is behind him, Christopher Nolan can now focus on what might be his most difficult film to date; his final act in the Batman Trilogy. The fan expectations I fear will never be met and commercially, it will be surprising if lightning can be captured once again. No story details have been released whatsoever, so obviously the rumor mill is going mad with ideas and suggestions.

Where can he take the next film as a director? How will it all end? We may not know the answers, but we can certainly speculate with everyone. Today we will do just that with a co-op venture from The Mayor and The District Attorney. We have each selected our choices for villains and the actors we feel would most suit the role. Please leave your own feedback in the comments and we can all debate and speculate…it’s all we have. See our picks.

Why Everyone Should See Inception

inception

Dreams feel real while we’re in them.
It’s only when we wake up that we realize something was actually strange.

It’s said that Christopher Nolan spent ten years writing Inception.  To say the expectations for the film are high is a severe understatement.  His last film The Dark Knight went on to become one of the most successful movies of all time and garner the highest praise for any comic book adaptation ever.  Nolan succeeded in resuscitating Batman for our generation, and now I must declare he is doing the same with our movies.  Creating something this original and on such an epic scale should be praised and sought after.  No matter how high your personal expectations for Inception may be, the film deserves your attention for many reasons, everyone should see Inception. Tomorrow is the premiere of the Prince of Persia film and to say I have been torn would be an understatement. Hollywood is notorious for taking some of the most beloved video games and transforming them into steaming piles of cinematic rubbish. Super Mario Bros. had a humanoid Bowser, Mortal Kombat Annihilation utilized claymation, and House of the Dead was directed by Uwe Boll; just to name a few of the blunders. In the end, despite this track record of failure, I have decided that I will watch Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, and it is for these following reasons. (more…)

Ricky Gervais

RICKY GERVAIS WEEK is over, gutted.  I hope you had fun catching up with Ricky Gervais and the gang as much as I have.  Please visit Ricky’s honest and hilarious blog daily for updates.  The City of Films has dedicated a lot of time to Gervais, and it never gets boring.  There are many resources out there to get your Ricky fix, may I recommend a few?  The Office, Extras, The Ricky Gervais Show (podcast and HBO series), Ghost Town and Cemetery Junction.  Need more?  He was in an episode of Alias you could watch.

Ricky Gervais is an idol of mine, someone I look up to and who inspires me.  He is one of the smartest people I have come across in a long time – I would love to one day just have a chat with him about life.  The man has an extensive knowledge of the world whose ideas I find often reflect my own, it’s a great feeling.  As a fan I can only do my best to share with you the reasons that you too should appreciate the work of Ricky Gervais, his sense of humor and honesty above are often hard to come by with “celebrities”.  He makes it look easy.

He created, wrote, directed and starred in The Office, Extras.  Guest starred in Alias and 24.  Wrote and starred in The Simpson.  Lent his voice to GTA 4, SpongeBob and popped up in both Night at the Museum films and Stardust with Robert De Niro (his hero).  He starred in Ghost Town, made his directorial debut with The Invention of lying.  He finished his work on his collaboration with long time friend Stephen Merchant on their film Cemetery Junction – these just off the top of my head.  He makes his rounds doesn’t he?  Enjoy…

Ricky Gervais Simpsons
I didn’t think there was anything more Ricky Gervais could say or do for people such as myself to like him even more.  Then he went and revealed that he is a not just a fan of The Simpsons, but regards it as the best TV show of all time.

Matt Groening extended an invitation to Gervais after many of the creators and writers found they shared a love for The Office – saying: “Everybody on The Simpsons is a fan of The Office – it’s one of the best shows on TV in the last decade.” Where Ricky replied:   “This the most intimidating project of my career. The Simpsons is the greatest TV show of all time.” Gervais did an interview with UNCUT where he listed his top 10 sitcoms of all time [see list here] and guess who made #1? (more…)

What I’ve Been Watching

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

It’s been a long while since I have had the chance to sit down, crack my knuckles and speak to the good citizens of the City of Films. While the spotlight has been on The City Strip, I have had a chance to sit down, fire up the telly and watch a few flicks. So to provide a few recommendations, and perhaps some words of warning, here are my thoughts on what I’ve been watching.

Grow Up, Kevin Smith

Friday, March 12th, 2010

The year was 1994.  Kevin Smith took Sundance and Cannes by storm with his low budget and highly intellectual comedy ClerksMiramax took on the film and it was smooth sailing from there.  Awards and praise for the film and filmmaker with future rankings such as “number 34 on Bravo’s 100 Funniest Movies” [list].  It has since spawned comics, toys, a sequel and millions of fanboys for Kevin Smith.  This film ranks high for me and has the privilege above all other Kevin Smith films as being his best work with Chasing Amy coming in at a strong second.  Familiarize yourself with Kevin Smith: (more…)
